Columbus Avenue & 81st., 1972 (note the total lack of any a/c window units in any of the buildings seen in this view).......

Broadway & 159th, 1983

(judging here by the total lack of any a/c units in the windows of the surrounding apartment buildings, I think it's a pretty safe bet that the only a/c in the immediate area (except, perhaps, for the small shops) was aboard PA 2373).......

8th Avenue & 19th St., 1983.

Despite the number of all of the older buildings seen here, I can count only two window unit a/c's.......

Hunts Point & Senaca, 1981.

This gloomy, gritty "inner city" view typifies, sadly, the blight that devastated so much of the South Bronx, through the 1970's.

Residents indeed had to have guts to live through those dark days.

Also notice the remains of the now-defunct, vintage electric drug store sign, further adding to the depressing aura of the area............

Union Avenue & 163rd, 1981

Note that #6621 displays a blank roller curtain, and that there is also a taped paper sign in the windshield.......

Quick question:

When Spanish-language ads began appearing on the buses back in the 70's, how was it determined as to what routes the ads would be displayed on?

I know it would make sense to have such ads displayed on buses that ran on routes that then served mostly Hispanic areas (here, I'm thinking of Spanish Harlem and the South Bronx, in particular).......

Thanks for any info....

While on the subject of Spanish-language transit ads, I've always thought (being a die-hard car card fanatic, anyway!) that transit ads themselves, through the decades, are also an excellent way to monitor changing demographics in certain areas served by the buses and the subways.

This makes me recall the little African-American lad featured on the old "Levy's" bread ads? ("You don't have to be Jewish to Love Levy's", back in the 70's)

On the subways, I well remember car cards (both in English and Spanish) for "EL PICO" coffee, back in the early and mid-1980's.

Seeing the transit ads aimed at different ethnic groups (to me, anyway) truly emphasized the diverse vibrancy that makes "Noo Yawk" so interesting.

Too, I also feel that the study of transit ads (regardless of whom they target) are true time machines unto themselves, as we have certainly learned here in our many fascinating discussions of buses past....... Wink
