Established in 1932, the Paterson-Broadway terminal (today served by NJT) originally served both buses and streetcars (PSNJ)

The last streetcars were replaced by buses in 1938.......

Here's the Paterson terminal as it appeared in 1937; note the PS streetcar on an NRHS excursion, though carrying a "HUDSON RIVER" sign.

The buses are PS YELLOW "Z" types (these had to be BRUTES to handle!)

Several PS trolley lines served this terminal into the 1930's; the very last (the busy "HUDSON RIVER" line) was converted to bus in August, 1938.

This was also the last PS streetcar line to use this terminal (in later years, it became bus route #B-1); NJRT interurbans also served the terminal until December, 1928.......

The last PS trolleys to run into Paterson were those on the "HUDSON RIVER" Line, which originated in Edgewater.

This melancholy photo was taken just prior to the conversion to buses on PS's BERGEN Division (August, 1938)

*Historical note: until 1943, PS also operated the connecting 125th St. ferryboat line; after 1943, under new ownership, the ferry continued to operate until December, 1950, using modern diesel-electric boats.

These ferries later operated between St. George and 69th St., Brooklyn; in November, 1964, this busy line was shut down, replaced by the new V-N bridge............

Until about 1927, two-car MU trains were run on PS's busy "HUDSON RIVER" line, between Paterson and Edgewater.

Their MU gear later removed, these cars remained the line's backbone until conversion to bus in 1938........

Leaving Paterson well behind her, Edgewater-bound PS "HUDSON RIVER" line #3513 is making a stop in Hackensack, near the NYS&W's Main St. depot (1935)

The NYS&W, also, served Paterson.

The large "Golden Glow" headlight mounted on the dash suggests that this was a late PM run; as this line also utilized lengthy private ROW stretches, these big headlights were invaluable on night runs........

Also serving Paterson was the "#15 PASSAIC"; the dual-powered ASV trolleybuses replaced the streetcars on this route in 1937.

Seen here is an older YELLOW "Z" That PS converted into an ASV; it is seen leaving the Hoboken terminal (note the elevated PS trolley terminal above, which served the remaining HUDSON Division streetcars until 1949).......

Here is a more modern YELLOW dual-powered ASV on the "#15 PASSAIC"; note that the coach is wearing the new PS postwar gray; sadly, by 1947, all ASV lines would be replaced by motor bus.....

Many thanks for the seven fascinating posts about the Broadway Bus Terminal, which I probably never visited. Maybe Inter-City was not welcome at a Public Service terminal. The link below is a scene from the TNJ era, the exterior of the waiting room, with the Star of Hope Mission next door.
---
Some place I read that, including las guaguas (o peseros o vans), the Broadway Terminal sees a thousand departures daily.

Looking at the 1937 photo and checking Google Street View, it seems that the building to the right with sloped roofs is still there. This terminal may be just a short block off Main Street, but it also has the feel of a back alley. It's a half-mile or so from the Erie station. Express Service vans are parked across from the bus terminal, but on Main Street, I see vans marked Taino Express New York-Paterson. Taino was apparently a pre-Columbian language on the islands.

N4:

You are quite welcome....my pleasure! Wink

Glad that you shared that picture showing the terminal as it looked a long while back........New Jersey urban archeology!

Here's an oddity that I have had in my collection many eons:

It is a 1973 NORTHEAST COACH LINES timetable; on the cover, a New Look is shown......a Paterson terminal (according to the TT cover) was then located at Church & Market Sts.

What DOES make this TT odd (to say the least) is that Paterson is NOT listed as a stop, anywhere inside, although it IS shown as a route on the map.....strange!

The TT also lists direct service to both the GREAT GORGE ski area, as well as the MEADOWBROOK DINNER THEATRE in Cedar Grove..........

In this rare circa-1955 view, we see PS bus #A182 on the "#98 RIVER ROAD" at the PS terminal (W. 167th St.), awaiting departure......

Please accept a correction. In popular language, the Jersey bus terminals were at 168th Street because that was the designation on the two subway stations nearby. However, your photo was taken from West 167th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. The Public Service terminal was on the northeast corner of that intersection. The nycsubway.org gives the wrong cross street on three photos.

Appreciate the correction! (and corrections made to posts!)

Being a "Joisey Boy" , this is news to me.....thanks! Wink

My error within a correction: Mom attended P.S. 169 (not 168) on 169th Street! Her school was replaced with a new building.
