Thanks from me, too....that R-160 with the fold-down seats did not have the poles that split...must be a very rare handful with that feature...next time I see one, I'll have to remember to take a photo...or at least note the car number...

TARS streetcar interior (1940)

Commuters were indeed a STYLISH lot, back in the day!

Note IRT-style seating; many streetcars (including those run by PSNJ) had "bowling alley"-type seating, as is illustrated here.

Standees certainly had more than enough room, during the rush hours!

Note, also, the leather straps.......

A rare interior view depicting B&QT PCC #1002; note the turnstile just behind the operator's position.......

SIRT ME-1 interior views; note the painted metal subway-style straps, rapid transit/suburban-style seating, and bare light bulbs.

Had the proposed Narrows tunnel been built, SIRT trains would have connected with the BMT's 4th Avenue line in Brooklyn, enabling Staten Island commuters to enjoy a one-seat ride into lower Manhattan (Chambers St.)

Mom and I rode these nostalgic old cars too many times to count, back in the 1960's.......

Here are two interior views detailing historic Chicago "L" equipment; both leather and metal straps recall bygone New York rapid transit equipment......

I used to fantrip down to Tottenville with my old buddy in the early '60.s...
IIRC, the crew wore B&O RR uniforms, that of the SIRT's owner....

traildriver:

Recall, too, the classic B&O position light signals on the SIRT (I believe they have all been replaced by this time) Sad

I clearly remember seeing B&O/SIRT motormen and conductors at the snack bar in the terminal concourse at St. George, where Mom and I would enjoy a hot dog and an icy orangeade.....man, can't believe so many memories like this are well over 50 years old now! Shocked

Riding the SIRT back then was like riding both a big city rapid transit line and a Midwestern interurban.......grade crossings with clanging bells, old wooden stations, barren meadows in many areas between stops....it was never the same when the grade crossings were all eliminated, and the venerable old ME-1's were replaced by R-44's.

Hard to believe that the 44's themselves are now on the SIRT well over 40 years now........

The new order overtakes the old in this symbolic 1973 SIRT view taken at at Tompkinsville, in 1973..........

ME-1's await the call to the next rush hour at Tottenville, 1969.

At the time this late 60's photo was taken, the old "SUNRISE" ferryboat service to Perth Amboy had been gone six years; Mom and I used to love that little waterborne "seaside excursion" while on a happy, long-ago SIRT day trip......... Wink

When I used to see the abandoned slip from the Tottenville side, I always regretted just having missed the opportunity to take that ferry.

Nowadays, to get from Tottenville to Perth Amboy via public transportation, would require a very long detour....
the only crossing from Staten Island to New Jersey served by a local bus is at the other end at Bayonne, and to go even from there to Perth Amboy is not easy...

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

What great memories that old photo brings back........THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

This is just how I remember the old Perth Amboy slip appearing back in the early 60's, when Mom and I were riding the old SIRT! Very Happy

It appeared (and was!) quite ramshackle and weathered, especially when viewed waterside (same at Tottenville!)

The "SUNRISE" boats in use then were the "IRVINGTON" and the "PIERMONT" (I have a photo Mom took in 1963, showing me on the "IRVINGTON'S" deck at Perth Amboy, with a '62 Chevy behind me!

The SIRT operated the crossing until 1948, using ancient sidewheel, walking-beam engine boats, the "PERTH AMBOY", and the "CHARLES GALLOWAY".

Into the 90's, you could still see the decayed remains that marked the old Tottenville slip; today, even these remains have vanished.

The Perth Amboy slip (now minus the structure which housed the machinery that raised and lowered the now-removed loading apron) has been restored and is now a landmark.

Ahhhh, to go back to 1962 and experience it all over again....... Rolling Eyes

*Article incorrectly states that steam operation on the line stopped in 1943; the correct date (as I had mentioned in my previous post) was 1948, when "SUNRISE" took over operations, and replaced the old SIRT steamers with small, open-decked diesel vessels......

Tottenville, 1964.

The ramshackle slip, seen in the background above the ME-1's, had then only been abandoned several months.

It all looks so lonesome........
