Yard area at Tottenville, 2010.

In the distance, you can easily see that the old slip has vanished without a trace......

A couple of years ago, I took a boat tour from Pier 11 East River, that crossed over to Staten Island the and completely circumnavigated it, returning to New York...the tour guide pointed out the location of the Tottenville landing, and the Perth Amboy slip, among the other fascinating sights...neat passing under the Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals, ....
and the Bayonne Bridge, and also the old SIRT bridge. We also crossed under the Verrazano Bridge, but I've done that many times on cruise ships.

If you're interested, this site is from the organization that ran my tour...I notice now that they are only departing from Staten Island, so that considerably shortens the trip (and probably saves expenses from the chartered NY Waterways ferryboat used
http://lighthousemuseum.org/visit/lighthouse-boat-tours/

And just this past Tuesday, I got another look at the raised roadway on the Bayonne Bridge on this tour that included container ships being worked at Port Newark and Port Elizabeth, run by this other organization....

traildriver:

Appreciate the link....will indeed check it out later! Wink

Odd that you mentioned the Bayonne Bridge; several years back, a rail buddy who grew up in Bayonne, told me that he'd heard that there was provision on the Bridge to handle streetcars/rapid transit at some later time....this was indeed NEWS to me! Shocked

Imagine the SIRT's ME-1's running into Bayonne, or, in more modern times, the HBLR being extended over the span.......truly makes interesting speculating! Very Happy

In the H&M's (PATH) early years, there had been proposals to extend the H&M south through Bayonne, and thence to Staten Island, via new tubes under the Kill Van Kull.......hmmmm.......wonder how the mighty B&O would have dealt with that, especially that the H&M had close ties with the PRR? Rolling Eyes

Remember, also, that the PRR and the H&M (later PATH) operated "joint service" trains to Newark (1911-1967); I well remember the 1958 H&M/PATH Class "K" cars wearing PRR keystones, when I was much, much, younger........

Interesting sidenote:

Until 1961, the massive Harbor Bridge (Sydney, Australia) not only carried motor vehicles, but also, trams.

Electric MU suburban trains also traveled across the massive span, which (IMHO) recalls both the Bayonne Bridge as well as the Hell Gate Bridge.

At its peak, the tram network in Sydney was among the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, operating over 2000 cars.

Recall, also, that the Brooklyn Bridge carried BMT elevated trains (until 1944) and trolleys, until 1950........

traildriver:

Correct! Wink

Only the PRR-owned cars were equipped with cab signals, which meant that they were always located at train ends.

The same held true during the MP-38 "Red McAdoo" era.

PATH lettering replaced H&M lettering on the H&M-owned cars, post -1962.

Joint PRR/PATH service ended with the ALDENE PLAN startup in April, 1967, when CNJ commuter trains were rerouted into Penn Station, Newark, abandoning the CNJ's old tidewater terminal on the Hudson River in Jersey City.

The "K" cars remained in revenue service until 1989, when they were converted into MOW equipment.

Sadly, none were preserved (these handsome cars initiated air conditioning not only on the H&M, but also, on New York area rapid transit in general)

They were also the earliest production model rapid transit cars to operate anywhere in the country.

I rode these cars many times as a youngster, and commuted on them almost daily, between 1979 and 1989.....I still miss those classic cars today!

A Newark-bound PRR/H&M "Red McAdoo" train, just beyond Journal Square, circa 1957; note the PRR position lights and catenary (all long since removed).......

Until the Joint Service demise (1967) H&M/PATH trains passed through a grade crossing (along with PRR tonnage) at West Side Avenue in Jersey City.

Until November, 1961, PRR commuter trains used these same rails to reach the old Exchange Place terminal in Jersey City.

Here we see old views showing both "K"/MP-52's" and "Red McAdoos" speeding through the crossing; I well recall the PRR/H&M/PATH trains blowing their horns (two long/one short/one long) as they blew through......
