During WW2, many transit companies across the country had selected buses and streetcars painted to reflect a patriotic note, or to encourage enlistment in the armed forces.

Many could be quite elaborate.

In Los Angeles during WW2, several PCC's were elaborately painted up to look like fighter planes, emblazoned with the message:

"BE A HOME FRONT ACE! BECOME A TROLLEY PILOT!"

In some cities, you could also see buses and streetcars painted in distinctive liveries for the RED CROSS and the MARCH OF DIMES, as well, back in the day......
