All:

When the remaining trolleybus routes in Brooklyn were converted to buses in 1960, did the TA have to order new Fishbowls to replace the electric coaches, or, were the enough buses already on hand to make the conversion possible?

Also, in the last decade of Brooklyn streetcar operation (1946-1956) were any of the former car depots converted to BoT/NYCTA bus garages? (the long-gone 9th Ave. depot has since been replaced by a large school, if I am correct)

Appreciate any info.....thank you in advance....

Re:

On the bottom page 41 in "NEW YORK TRANSIT MEMORIES" (by Harold A. Smith) there is a photo showing a new NYTCA Fishbowl behind trolleybus #3085 on the "47 TOMPKINS" line, at Williamsburgh Bridge Plaza in March of 1960.

Indeed a contrast in styles and eras!

From what I recall, the first batch of Fishbowls were ordered in '59 with the intentions of replacing the trolley buses. Perhaps not with Fishbowls but probably using other older buses.

It would make more sense to order new buses to replace older equipment to avoid a shortage than ridding old equipment first than ordering new buses to fill the void.

Frankie:

Thanks....as always, appreciate your input! Wink

I learned earlier (via the main nycsubway.org page on the Brooklyn trolleybuses) that the electric coaches were indeed replaced by gas buses; I would guess that these were Old Looks that were beginning to get a bit long in the tooth, being non-diesels.

Obviously, these gas buses were displaced from other lines/depots when the Fishbowls began arriving......

....just imagine if the NYCTA had decided to RETAIN the trolley bus lines in Brooklyn, replacing the original equipment at some point during the 60's with Fishbowl TROLLEY BUSES.......(!!) Shocked

Far-fetched, yes, but, man, what a thought....... Wink

Dayton, Ohio, once operated two Fishbowl trolley buses.

These coaches were also quite unique in that, though utilizing GM New Look bodies, they never appeared on any GM list.

They were originally ordered by Brown Boveri for Edmonton......
