More Fifth Avenue Coach and New York City Omnibus nostalgic scenes
(look closely at the Chatham Square scene and you'll notice some Macks belonging to Avenue B and East Broadway Transit)

No Fifth Avenue Coach buses in sight but we see two Surface Transportation GM TDH-4507s on 42nd Street. They could be on either the M104 Broadway or M106 42nd Street Crosstown routes.
How many remember those beautiful Fifth Avenue traffic lights??

Fifth Avenue Coach GM TDH -5106, number 2620...
the original caption to the photo says...
"Lucinda, of the dance team Ramon and Lucinda is shown admiring one of the new soft ride coaches of Fifth Avenue Coach Lines which went into operation on Manhattan's streets last month. This bus shown in front of the Hotel Manhattan, features airplane lounge seating and flickerless fluorescent lighting for greater eye care."
Nothing is mentioned about the size of the destination sign box.
In the FACCo issue of Motor Coach Age, it describes the sign box contained fluorescent lighting equipment. Yet, the Mack C-49 that came in 1959 also had fluorescent signs but not portruding sign box like the GMs.
Does anyone know why this box was used?? Only the FACCo 5106s had this box.

I'm not a New Yorker but I remember those traffic lights. Passing through NYC about 1960 I got pulled over for a red light violation. Cop just gave me a warning. Told me that a lot of out-of-towners don't expect to see a two light traffic signal on the wrong side of an intersection.

I wonder if the passenger on the BoT Mack was entertainer Jimmy Durante? He had a big Shnazzola like the passenger.

Re. the pic taken out of Washington Square Park: the park was closed to bus traffic on Sept. 2, 1963 after years of pressure from community activists. By then only three routes of the old Fifth Avenue Coach Company - today's M2, M3 and M5 - terminated there; by then all ex-FACCo, New York City Omnibus and Surface Transit routes were all under the aegis of the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTOA). (In the last two months or so, newer TDH-5303's amongst the first 255 buses ordered specifically for MaBSTOA would have gone through the park, alongside the older Old Looks.) After that date, their southern terminus was rerouted to 8th Street between Fifth and University Place, then they turned at University to 9th Street and back on to Fifth. This arrangement lasted only two months due to complaints about the pollution and bus bunching from area residents. Another route change took effect Nov. 10, 1963 - the same day Sixth Avenue south of Herald Square was made one way northbound, and Broadway between Herald Square and Canal Street, one way southbound. The M2 and M3's southern terminus was then shifted to 8th Street and 4th Avenue; the M5's was shifted further south to Houston Street and West Broadway, leading to a change in its route south of 8th as per a New York Times article on Nov. 8, 1963: " . . . through East Eighth Street and Broadway southbound and via the Avenue of the Americas and West Eighth Street northbound." In other words, for its first two years, two months and four days under this route pattern, the ex-FACCo #5 only traveled through Sixth between Houston and 8th Streets. The rest of its northbound route up to 57th Street would be moved to the rest of Sixth up to that stretch on Jan. 14, 1966 when Fifth Avenue became one way southbound.
As for that Hotel Manhattan shot - I suppose this for years was the Milford Plaza, and today ROW NYC?

Great pics; I'm sure that Mr. Linsky would be very, very proud (and is up there above the clouds, probably smiling and nodding approval of this post).
