As the bus in the movie The Graduate drives away this part can be seen attached to the bumper. What is it?

It's a puzzle to me...
the fact that it is offside a bit, negates any theory I have that it may be part of a trailer hitch or something like that....or just additional bumper protection....

Looks like there may be a ring at the top for a tow bar...but then why would it be off center?

Not knowing anything about film making could they have towed the vehicle that had the camera on it then released it to capture a moving shot of the bus pulling away?
I agree though, it seems to be a tow point. If it was used to tow the camera vehicle perhaps the reason it's offset is due to a requirement of said vehicle not anything to do with the bus.

That is what I was thinking also. It definitely looks temporary as if it was done for the movie.

Possibly to clear the exhaust system? Throwing darts on this, hoping for a hit!

Good guess. I'll go check under the bus to see how the exhaust runs under there.

Yeah....could be they had to mount it that way account of whatever's directly ahead of the bumper area, structurally....

I looked at the bus and yes, the exhaust pipes would have interfered with mounting that thing in the center. You can almost see the exhaust pipes immediately to the left of it in the picture above. A small mystery solved. Thanks everyone.
