All:
Anyone here know of the disposition(s) of the 870's after they were pulled from service en masse?
I think I recall reading that the buses wre sold off/rebuilt, and ended thier days operating for smaller outfits.
I cannot be 100% sure, but I think that one in particular that I remember (running on what had been North Hudson Boulevard's #1) out of Journal Square) many years ago, might have been one of the ex-MTA buses.
I remember it having a distinct list to one side and always seemed to be in a somewhat cranky mood (to me, it only added to the decidely lopsided bus' "personality"!)
Again, I am only guessing; it's been many years since I last (or saw) rode that particular bus (mid/late 90's)
Thank you again.....

Coiuld this bus (PA1208) be one of the ex-MTA units?
The first-generation RED & TAN Fishbowl alongside serves to offer a distinct and interesting contrast in transit bus design, over two decades......

I could be wrong but I think one or two ended up at Jet-Away Transportation of Glenwood Road, Carnarsie. They were used to shuttle late arriving guests at Belmont Racetrack from the far parking lots to the main gate. |

According to "THE BUS WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSES", NJT recieved a number of rebuilt ex-MTA 870's.
Not sure of the "heritage" of this bus, but here is NJT's #1501......

Definitely not ex-nyct. The PBL's had there own 870's direct from Grumman. When the NYCT 870's were rebuilt, the Grumman emblem was removed from under the windshield and top rear corner. They were replaced with Flxible emblem.
Rhor Industries designed the 870. Sold Flxible to Grumman and told them it was tested and production ready. AM General bought back the 870's from NYCT and dealt with the fallout as Grumman already sold the Flx company.

This might have been a publicity photo on 5th Avenue; note that #100 has no MTA herald on the dash, and "NEW YORK CITY" displayed on the destination sign......

The GRUMMAN and the soaring Twin Towers remind us of another time in New York, when the world was just a bit more stable than it is today......both the GRUMMANS and the WTC were then so much a part of our everyday lives.
The old "BELL TELEPHONE" insignia also further dates this now-nostalgic scene......
