Another ex-PSNJ (TNJ) "sightseeing window" Fishbowl (V705) on approach to the Lincoln Tunnel, 1981........

I had forgotten about Arrow Trailways, or Arrow Motor Bus Company. It was owned by Ron Moore. He sold the company and moved west in 1981 to start the latter day Burlington Trailways....see http://burlingtontrailways.com/about-us/history/ |

To me, the SDH-5302 sightseers, were not "true suburbans"...the SDM's, with the stick shift, and overhead package racks instead of standee windows were. I suppose you could order either one either way from GM Coach at the time, so what made them all suburbans was the raised floor and underfloor baggage compartments as opposed to a one-door transit type..... |

I remember some Fishbowls operating for ORANGE & BLACK into the 80's that I always referred to as "semi-suburbans" (my personal way of describing them!); they had the single door and rear a/c unit that was so typical of the "straight suburbans" (again, another moniker I came up with!), but, instead of the usual high-back seats, these buses had "transit"-style seating, and no overhead parcel racks
I recall a number of Old looks in a similiar configuration, many moons ago, running on both O&B and PSNJ routes.
It was a loooooong time ago, my friend.....

On a somewhat related note, the very last Canadian suburbans built featured "sightseeing" panels in the roof.
These six S8H-5303's were built in 1970 for METROPOLITAN PROVINICIAL of Montreal.......

Here's a tin litho toy GREYHOUND "Fishbowl" that is certainly unusual!
Though the front end is a very good representation of a Fishbowl, the body is anything but!
This general body style (sans Fishbowl front) was used in a number of different tin buses besides those wearing GREYHOUND livieries, from the late 1950's through the 1960's.
This particular bus also was available with the same front end as the bus seen in the following link, but it (the front) had a distinct curve to it, which set it apart from the flat front version of this toy.
Virtually the same "Fantasy Fishbowl" was also available as a larger friction toy (13" long!), in both GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS liveries.
Note, too, like many non-SCENICRUISER toys, this bus is also carrying the "SCENICRUISER" name.
I have all versions of this bus in my collection today.....

Another view of one of the WF's-era tin friction GREYHOUND Fishbowls, complete with its original box.
This version lacks the green tinted plastic windshield, found on other versions......

In speaking of "Fishbowl" GM's on GREYHOUND's roster many years ago, we must make brief mention of those that operated in Bay Area commuter service through the 1960's, if I am not mistaken, I believe SamTrans operated these buses in later years, before finally retiring them......

Thanks for that link, NYO!
I just happened to be on temporary assignment at San Francisco for Greyhound in that period...December of 1971...
Greyhound still operated a very large commuter operation at that time, with three separate districts in the Bay Area, alone...Marin County, which was conveyed to Golden Gate Transit, as the timeline shows; Peninsula, which became SamTrams; and East Bay which mostly went to AC Transit.
Greyhound operated mainly from their 7th Street Terminal, but also operated from the Ferry Building, and the TransBay Transit Terminal, as well as certain street pickups. The fleet consisted of a mix of 'hand-me-down's' from the mainline fleet, a well as suburban's. Also some mainline fleet operated various local schedules.
They still had some PD-4151 'Silversides' in operation back then! Also, PD-4103's, TDM4801's, and Scenicruiser's with an extra row of seats added. Lot's of 'exotic' stuff in 1971.... |

Glad you found the link interesting.........you are most welcome, my friend!
So, you were out there in SF working for The Hound back then.....lucky man!
Years ago, on the old (and sorely missed!) "STRAYHOUND" site, I do recall seeing a few pics of some elderly Silversides still being used in Bay Area commute service, in the late 60's.......without a doubt, there was much for the nostalgia-minded bus enthusiast in operation out there, back then!
I've seen pictures of the 30 MACK C49DM's that were also used in SF-area commute service; PACIFIC GREYHOUND operated those 30.
Four were also delivered to RICHMOND GREYHOUND.
Aaaaahhhh, if we could only go back in time........
