Mention "HIGHWAY TRAVELER", and most of us older fellows envision the handsome 4104, which debuted in 1954.

As can be seen here, another bus was dubbed "HIGHWAY TRAVELER" years before the first 4104's entered service with GREYHOUND.....

A beautiful 1950's color illustration of the GX-2.

Many of the early tin litho toy SCENICRUISERS were clearly inspired by the GX-2......

Actually the GX-1 "Highway Traveller", was not as 'massive' as you may think, looking at those photo's....note it only had two axle's, was only 35 feet long, and not all that tall...probably less than 12 feet...
If you put an MC-6 "Supercruiser"next to it, you might be surprised....

traildriver:

Funny, how appearances can be decieving, especially in vintage photos......from the old photos and ads I've seen, the bus looks quite the monster!

Still, it would have been great had both the GX-1 and the GX-2 had survived, and were in the GREYHOUND museum today.......I am sure they would BOTH be very popular exhibits!

NYO...Agreed!

Thank Goodness, that Greyhound did save and restore a nice assortment of historic buses....did you see some of them at the Meadowlands last summer?

Due to family health issues, I cannot travel, so did not get to the Meadowlands; in fact, I did not even know that some of those buses were there until you told me!

Here we see a stunning color view of TRAILWAYS' "CONTINENTAL", built by ACF-Brill.

We not only see hints of the future SCENICRUISERS here, but we also can see some decided influence from the British "observation coaches" of the day.

Again, another stunning bus well worthy of preservation, had it survived today.

Later on, I believe it operated for some years for a company called "PENN JERSEY", but am not 100% sure.

An early view of the GX-2; it is pretty obvious that this stunning coach indeed turned heads wherever it went!

Again, its influence can be seen in the many early tinplate toy SCENICRUISERS that were bieng made in large quanties in Japan for export to the United States.......

Earlier on in this thread, I posted a link showing the underbody of a late 1950's toy SCENICRUISER, that was powered by a battery inside a hand-held control box, attatched to the bus by a flexible cable.

Here is a good view of that same bus; note the "GREYHOUND LINE" lettering.

This bus came in two different GREYHOIUND schemes, as well as an "AIRPORTER" version.

I have all three in my collection today......

This late 50's/very early 60's friction SCENICRUISER is one of the models where you can still see some influence from the GX-2.

This particular toy bus came two GREYHOUND schemes; I also have one in red and white with "GOLDEN EAGLE" emblazoned on the sides.......

This circa early 60's-era photo from Missouri indeed has a timeless "Americana" feel to it; note, too, the vintage Studebaker waiting for the mighty SCENICRUISER to clear the road ahead!

traildriver/all:

A classic roadside portrait of a new-era "SCENICRUISER SERVICE" Scenicruiser; IMHO, this scheme (and the original from 1954) were the most handsome to adorn the buses.

The later "Pepsi" scheme, to be quite frank, never did much for me; at least, not on the SCENICRUISERS. I much prefer the two earlier schemes, which were truly attractive and stylish.....
