Schenck Transportation – A history and Roster

On April 5th. 1926 the Island Traction Company became Schenck Transportation originally operating from a livery stable in Great Neck, New York.

The company, which had moved to permanent quarters in Floral Park and was eventually taken over by the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority in 1973, operated routes generally in the north central part of Nassau County with a number of feeders to both Jamaica and Flushing in Queens and charter services under Schenck Tours.

Other than eight Mack buses bought new in 1942, there is virtually no record of a prewar roster. In fact, I can find nothing listed for the period between 1942 and the first GM purchases in 1951, and would assume that whatever equipment was added in that period was used.

In 1960 Schenck purchased the assets of the Universal Auto Bus Company which was a local Great Neck operator and, at the same time acquired Nassau Bus Lines with routes through Lynbrook, Long Beach and Far Rockaway (apparently, Schenck was then absorbed itself by Bee Line - another large Nassau operator).

Schenck’s unique combination of jet black and cherry red livery was easily recognizable by both passengers and industry colleagues.

I am uncertain as to the origin of the name Schenck but there is a Schenck Avenue in Great Neck which may have had some relation to the owner of the company.

I herewith present a roster, overview of routes and a GM ad touting Schenck’s TDH 3612 models;

Pictured below is Schenck Transportation # 218 - a 1953 GM TDH 3612 (ser# 1907) delivered in march of 1953.

Note in the brochure above that GM touts these buses as 3610's when the company actually only purchased 3612's and 3714's.

As I noted elsewhere on this forum, I believe that Schenck carried on as a charter operator (after the MSBA takeover) into the early 1980's. I remember following two of their OTR's down Queens Blvd before they out ran me. Several days later one of them flipped over from excessive speed.

I think that they may have Prevosts. The numbers that seemingly come to mind are 4901 & 4902 but that may be my memory playing tricks on me.

Hart Bus,

It is probable that because of the fact the Schenck's tour/charter business was a seperate entity, it was not part of the takeover and that's why they were able to continue under the name Schenck Tours.

The only heavy eqiupment that I remember clearly were at least one or two GM PD 4100 single and a half deckers which incidentally, were the last of their kind ever built by the company.

BTW; I have updated the Schenck roster and will continue to do so until I find every last bus they ever ran!

I certainly hope that these rosters that I am putting together are appreciated because the hours of research are unbelievable - but I enjoy it and, at my age, what else have I got to do?

Pictured below proudly standing in front of his Floral Park depot is Howard E. "Ernie" Schenck, President of Schenck Transportation Company.

The bus in the photo is a brand new Schenck upper 200 series TDH 3714.

Pictured below that traveling a typical Roslyn, L.I. lane is another 1953 Schenck TDH 3714 # 223 sporting a wide suburban type aluminum decorative belt along the window line.

The company specified passenger safety split sashes and custom directional signals on all its 'old look' buses.

Please note that I have completed the Schenck Roster which now includes all equipment newly purchased by the company from 1942 through 1979.

However, there is a void from both 1926 to 1942 and from 1942 to 1951 for which I find no records whatsoever.

I would assume that any acquisitions made during those years may have been second hand.

Any assistance in filling in those gaps would be appreciated.

My sources were various including the records of the Mack Truck Museum, The Motor Bus Society and The Ohio Museum of Transportation.

I am now working feverishly to complete 'The Buses of Bee Line, Inc.' (L.I.) which should be coming up shortly.

As always, I thank everyone for their interest and support.

A slight revision or adjustment to Mr. L's fine work.

I was researching a GM Builder's plate up for bid on E-bay (not bidding on it) and found the following information from "Delivery Lists on the Web"

Schenck Tours received the following P8M 4095A's in 1975

Serial # Fleet Number

1201 519
1202 521
1203 520

I don't know why the fleet numbers are out of order from the serial numbers. Don't know if its a typo or not.

It was also nice to see that several other fallen flags from Long Island, namely Inter-County, Coram Bus and Harran also had the deck and one-half's in their fleets.

Hart Bus,

Thanks for the info - always welcome - every little bit helps!

Unfortunately, OMT doesn't list GM Parlor Coaches, and Delivery Lists on the Web is a good lead.

I remember the Harran 4095's specifically (used to see them at Aqueduct), and Inter County's were always floating around.

Thanks again.

Another 'this just in',

A further review of GM PD 4104 production records discloses that one coach was omitted from my original roster which shall be amended as follows;

GM PD 4104 (ser # 4148) Fleet # 501 Delivered 1959.

As evidenced by this photo, Schenck Tours ran Silver Eagles into the 1980s. Hopefully d.marra will be able to provide more information.

Michael,

I think that Schenck may still be in the charter business as evidenced by this URL;

http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7308408/floral_park_ny/schenck_travel_tours.html

I do know that they continued long after their transit operation went to Long Island Bus.

Coram Bus Service wasn't that big with coach buses, they ran from the City to somewhere in the late 70's. but their thing was school buses (which they at one point rented) and transit. Coarm Bus Service is still around as a transit op called CBS Lines, or so i'm told.

I think that they are just a packager of trips. They get a group together and charter a bus + make the other arrangements. I do not think that they have any coaches anymore.

A glimpse inside the Verizon Nassau County driectory December 2004 edition shows a a one line listing for "Schenck Travel and Tours" and
"call New Hyde Park Tele # 354-8900" with no street address.

You are correct about CBS Lines is still in the transit business operating several routes for Suffolk County as a contracted carrier.
