St. George's church is in the background.
Would anyone know what the above building was in the 1940's? On the Main St. side of the building, I recall Dad and me boarding a North Shore bus for The Bronx here. It then broke down, and they moved us to another bus.

N4 Jamaica,
I'll take a real wild guess if it's the building at the corner of Main and Roosevelt that you speak of;
It's lobby floor is typical of either a bank branch or a Provident Loan office and I would say that if it were a bank it probably would have been The Bank of the Manhattan Company (now Chase) - they had more branches by far than any other in Queens at the time.
Of course, these are far out guesses and probably all wrong!
Regards,
Mr. 'L' |

Mr. Linsky, you are right. Because of your suggestion, I googled Flushing Bank of Manhattan and came up with this fascinating page of Main Street and confirmation that it, indeed, was a branch of the Bank of Manhattan.

Nice photos of one of my longtime favorite transit neighborhoods!
It still feels a bit strange seeing those C40LF's (a bus I normally associate with routes operating in B'klyn out of JG Depot) working the Q25. |

And I can't get over NOT seeing buses with orange on them. As i said in an earlier post on this board change may be inevitable, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. |

I must post this link from Facebook, as it shows a Q27 in 1943, westbound on Roosevelt Avenue at Main Street.

Great shot, thanks for posting! Wish there were more from that era. The Main Tavern was still going strong into the '60's....
Remember cold days when their corner windows were steamed up by the Goulash cooking behind them... |

On BusChat, member NorthShore pointed out that the bus is a White. Please note the black paint on the upper portion of the headlights, something I can recall from wartime. The street loading puzzles me, as I thought North Shore had its bus terminal a block east of this spot.

Presumably, Rosewood is a neighborhood along the current Q27, but I don't know where it is. |

The White shown is a North Shore 1937 40-passenger Model 687. The people shown may be queued for other buses that used the same curbside bus stop. The headlight blinders made it harder for headlights from been seen from the air in the event of an air raid.
Rosewood is an "unofficial" neighborhood (not found on maps) where Springfield Blvd intersects the Long Island Expressway today (Horace Harding Blvd during the North Shore days).
