I have been curious for some time to how many (if any) former PSNJ garages (car barns) are still in use by NJT?
I remember the old Union City garage closing in the early/mid-90's, when the new Meadowlands facility opened (the sprawling facility is now used by the Department of Public Works)
I also remember the Paterson garage (another former car barn) still being used by NJT into the 1990's (like the barns at Union City, you could still see the old trolley rails in some of the bays)
What about the busy PS facilities in Newark? (Roseville/Ferry St./Plank Road)
Do any of these still serve NJT, or have all either been torn down entirely?
Roseville, I recall, was a very large facility.
Also, Greenville in Jersey City?

Here is a recent view of the former PS/TNJ/NJT garages in Union City, looking northwest along New York Avenue (27th St. runs along the northern end of the old garage)
The majestic turretted barn was built during the 1890's; the newer addition (replacing an open trolley yard) was built some years later.
Originally serving trolleys (until 1949), it later served buses and, until 1947, ASV's.
As you can imagine, this was a very busy facility, back in the heyday of PSNJ.......

They say that a picture is worth a thousands words and this one sure fits that bill (that's when building were built like buildings should be!).
BTW; I'm wondering why so many of the turn of the century car barns such as the one pictured and the one that used to sit on Third Avenue in midtown Manhattan were built like medieval castles? (the only thing lacking were moats!).

Recall, back in the "olden times", so much urban infrastructure tended to be OVERBUILT.
Handsome, majestic, and anything but being constructed shoddily, such structures were clearly the work of "Olde World Craftsmen"; pride in the finished product was of great importance, back in the day!
Several classical builings, suggesting medieval castles and fortresses, also served various modes of transit in Baltimore, many decades ago.
The aforementioned NJT garage in Paterson (former PSNJ car barn), like the 1890's structure in Union City, also strongly suggests a formidable King Arthur-eque castle........

This 1930's photo shows the circa-WW1 extension to the Union City carbarns (this is the New York Avenue side of the building); the streetcars sport the late 1920's "De Luxe" paint scheme, worn by cars upgraded by PS.
The PS bus, seen in the background, is facing east on 29th St.......

Two vintage views showing the interior of "The Big House" (the original 1890's PS barn at Union City)
As is evident here, PSNJ certainly operated an interesting variety of equipment (both rubber tired and steel wheeled) back in the day!
The first view is looking towards the Bergenline Avenue (western) facade of the building.........
