In my experiences as a watcher of the fast growing Carey Transportation airport service system in the 50's and 60's in the New York metropolitan area, I was under the impression that the company's first Flxible Airporters dated from an improved model introduced in 1948.

But, to my surprise, I came upon the rare photo below taken at New Jersey's Newark Airport in November of 1946 showing what may have been among the company's first Flxibles in the guise of fleet # 102 probably built sometime in 1946 and modeled as a 23B246.

Basically, the only major exterior difference between the earlier and later versions was in the front clip in which the windshield took on the smoother curves of the body, the headlights reset as dual units and the two bumper like bars and fresh air vent between them under the windshield were removed.

Records show that the company bought about a dozen of the pictured model.

BTW; the plane in the photo was a Douglas DC-6 operated by National Airlines.

Photo available at eBay as item # 191319693815.

It looks as if many Clippers were used in airport service.
I remember those dark green Clippers roaring down the LIE.
Back then, I didn't yet know a Flx from a GM; I just knew them as the short buses with the small windows and the very round rear end.

Nice find! Used to regularly see the Carey Clipper's on the way to JHS along Main Street at Gravett Road, before they built the Van Wyck Expwy extension.....
They must have been on an Idlewild to LaGuardia shuttle run.....
