John,
#1407, a TDH 5108, and its ilk were the 'cat's meow' of buses in their day!
On 1407 I like the built in school bus lights (one to either side of the destination sign) which I've never seen done that way before and certainly nicer and neater then having them as added on slaphazardly and pointing limply in every direction.
The air horns and the rubber bumper protectors are also a nice touch.
Many many moons ago some friends of mine and I decided to go over to Newark to see a display of Hitler's personal Mercedes Benz staff car among others at an auto show and took the PSCT #118 out of the Port Authority Terminal and we specifically sat on the lounge seat in the rear so we could feel the roar of the Diesel especially in up and down mechanical gear changes (it could blow your mind!).
We had a great day and even stopped next door to Minsky's Burlesque Show (what we saw would be rated PG today!) but all and all I think the best part of the trip was the ride back and forth on one tough bus.
Regards,
Mr. 'L

John:
Growing up in northern NJ during the 60's, I LIVED in "BEAST" territory!
Those I was most familiar with were running for PSNJ, DE CAMP, and ORANGE & BLACK; those big "suburbans" were truly handsome and powerrful, and, man, what sweet music they made when in full cry!
My favorites were those sporting chrome dash strips, such as those on #1407.
To my young eyes, they made it look as though the bus were smiling!
Cannot believe that I haven't ridden aboard one since the late 70's!
Sure miss those sleek machines!

John:
Try this "BEAST" on for size:

Those bulky school flashers further add to its overall "Don't even THINK of messing with me, pal!" persona!
Date this classic "Joisey" view to 1977 (note the DE CAMP "Buffalo" just behind).......

Before getting back to the MACKS, I must share this 1970's photo of an Old Look belonging to SOMERSET ("THE BLUE STAR ROUTE")
Their striking paint scheme was nothing short eye-catching on their coaches; this 1970's photo truly emphasizes the bold paint job that these classic buses sported.........

Getting back to MACKS, this particularly formidable MACK was snapped out on "The Island", back in 1964.
Not only does the silver strip under the windows add a smart touch, but the windows on this particular MACK remind me of those used by ACF-BRILL.
Sure wish I could travel back in time and go for a ride aboard this hulking coach....or....better yet.....get behind the wheel and take 'er for a little excursion!

I was fortunate enough to have ridden this same bus! I remember well my trip to Yankee Stadium sponsored by the Mineola Police Boy's Club back in the early 60's who hired this bus to take us there. I sat in the very last seat just to enjoy the up and down motion thanks to the air suspension. Very impressive bus to say the least.

Frankie:
You lucky old dog!
Talk about "traveling in style"!
Still is sobering to think of how MACKS were still so commonplace in many areas during the 60's, and, today, you'd have to either hope to see one in some museum collection, or, perhaps, one restored by a private individual.
Hard to believe that's it now at least 46 years since I last rode aboard a MACK.........

I have seen image 607 somewhere else, maybe this board.
May Questions are:
1 - Where and when was this picture taken? I don't read Hebrew otherwise the it might be possible to identify the synogague that the buses are lined up, probably as a charter.
2 - Where did the buses come from?
1 - Community Coach probably was a repaint.
2 - Thee 45xx behind it? Looks like a similar livery to CT Transit.
3 - the 4506 looks similar to the 1950's Ohlly's livery.
4 - The PD-501 bringing up the rear. Obviously the hound was first ower, but who had it when it was photographed? |

They say that "one picture is worth a thousand words" - need I say more?

Enjoy,
