All:

To me, there was never a problem as to what to call what bus.

If it were a GMC, it was a "Fishbowl".

If it were a Flxible, it was a "New Look".

Veteran drivers I once knew always used the term "Fishbowl" for the GMC coaches.

Simple!

And yet, over the years, I have heard the term "New Look" used to describe the GMC bus.

IMHO, one look at the huge windshield of a GMC should be enough to see where the time-honored moniker "Fishbowl" originated!

Certainly, it's quite obvious where the inspiration for the Flex New Look came from (imitation, they say, is the sincerest form form of flattery!)

Then there is the book (and OUTSTANDING work, BTW), "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (Mckane & Squier); again, I think that "Fishbowl" should have been used instead of "New Look".

To me, a "New Look" book would be dealing with those coaches built by Flxible.

What are your thoughts?

"NYO"

NYO,

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of what is and what is not a 'New Look'!

Both GM and Flxible buses built in the sixties and seventies were 'New Looks' when you think of what they replaced from the two preceding decades.

For that matter all new models can be considered as New Looks at one time including GM's RTS's and Flxible's 870's and so on but you can thank GM for immortalizing 'New Look' as synonymous with the model that followed the 'Old Look' which, BTW, was once a New Look!

As far as 'Fishbowl' goes; I have never referred to GM's New Looks as Fishbowls and, if that nickname came about because of an all encompassing windshield configuration then you can count Flxible's model in the same league!

Many regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr."L":

As always, I greatly appreciate your comments.......always much of interest! (and, if we agreed ALL the time, things could get quite dull!)

So far as bus "monikers" go, I have also read that Old Looks were referred to (by some) as "loaves of bread" and "slope backs" (this was once on a now-defunct Baltimore transit site)

From "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS":

"........as the new buses were delivered, many transit properties staged 'name the bus' contests. While 'Fishbowl' was commonly used throughout the united States and Canada, some local names were:

Crystal Liners (St. Louis)

Transit Liners (Oakland)

Dreamliners-Los Angeles, Houston, San Antonio

Dandiliners-(Dallas)

StyleLiners-San Diego

Moderne-Aire Fleet (Virginia Transit Company).........."

(IMHO, some of these fanciful names sound like those emblazoned on the sides of the tin toy buses from Japan that were once sold in great profusion, here, many years back!)

Regardless WHAT these now classic coaches were called, they, nonetheless, were among the most attractive and most reliable buses ever to grace American streets!

IMHO the only bus that had a "all encompassing windshield" is the GMC fishbowl. The angular windshield of the Flxible was not the same look.

Jimbo:

Agreed.

Too, if you look at the windshield of a postwar TWIN COACH, you can see how it inspired the Flex New Look windshield, albiet on a much larger scale.....

From "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (McKane/Squier):

"...........the old Twin Coach windshield was redesigned and reconstructed with six larger pieces of glass in order to resemble the GM New Look Fishbowl design......."
