Speaking of New York "Fallen Flags", these two Old Look photos (34th & 2nd) from 1973 recall the days of "BERGEN BUS".

Old Looks were solid, rugged, long-lived, no-nonsense coaches that seemed to be everywhere you looked, back in the day (LOVE those silver dash strips!)

Who amongst us once thought that the day would come when they'd all be gone.

The theatre marquee here further dates this 1973 street scene (do I hear the "Odd Couple" theme playing?)

NYO,

ERROR, ERROR, ERROR!

The captions accompanying these photos are incorrect! - they are Jamaica Buses on charter.

In 1978 most of Jamaica's 5106's were transferred to commonly owned Green Bus Lines and wound up as pictured below.

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L":

Inaccurate captions such as these can be VERY misleading, especially to someone like myself who is not from New York, and therefore, not familiar with the companies that once existed.

With NJ photos, it is much easier for me to spot caption errors, as I've lived in the State for nearly 60 years; with the NY photos, I have to assume that the captions are correct.

Here again, here is where someone as knowledgeable as yourself proves himself highly valuable......your input is always greatly appreciated.....

DOMENICO #87 just outside the PABT, 1972.

Note the RED & TAN Fishbowls laying over at the rear of the church (Ironically, some years ago, we found out that my Dad was christened at this same church, back in 1907!)

Again, here is still another once commonplace scene that we took for granted.....

Several NHBL buses await departure at Journal Square, Jersey City, 1964.

Living only 15 minutes north of here at the time this photo was taken, the scene depicted here is one I experienced countless times growing up in the 60's; these are the same buses that rumbled by our old Union City apartment building, and are also the very buses that started my lifelong interest in transit.

Note the WHITE with a "5" placard in the windshield; this route (like the #1 LOCAL) also passed by our building (the stop was just feet away from our front stoop) and terminated at the PABT.

The WHITES (and MACKS) were gone by the later 60's; by that time, Fishbowls held down most "5" runs, but Old Looks could still be found on that line from time to time, particularly during rush hours.

Both the old #1 and #5 have long-since been renumbered and are now operated by NJT.

The historic LOEWS theatre has been restored, the J.M.FIELDS store is now a C.H. MARTIN; the area where the buses are awaiting departures is now totally unrecognizeable, since the construction of the PATH Transportation Center, which opened in 1974.

So many memories for yours truly in this nostalgic scene.....

NHBL Fishbowl B-114, just outside of Journal Squate proper.

At the time of this photo, the Square was undergoing massive renovation, and NHBL buses had to start and terminate their runs in a location away from where they had been for many years.

Note the "5" placard in the windshield, which was standard on this line which ran between JSQ and the "Port Of Authority" (as we locals referred to the PABT, back then)........

NYO,

A little information on the Pioneer buses shown via URL above;

First photo; #5000 - a 1964 49 passenger GM Coach SDM 5302 and one of two including # 4000 purchased new.

Second photo; #412 - a 1960 53 passenger GM Coach TDH 5301 and one of five numbered 412 to 416 purchased from Green Bus Lines in 1973.

Third photo; #'s 6405 and 6412 - 1964 53 passenger Flxible FD6V401-7's and two of nine numbered 6405 to 6413 purchased from Pelham Parkway Bus Service in 1973.

Note; of the hundreds of buses that passed through the hands of Pioneer Bus Corporation between 1954 and 1979 #'s 4000 and 5000 listed above were among less than ten that were ever bought new!

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L":

Great trivia on the "PIONEER" coaches....thanks!

From what you are telling me, PIONEER was a lot like the long-defunct Washington Street lines in Hoboken; it seems that their fleet through the years comprised of second and third-hand castoffs from other companies!

I well recall that line (14th St. Hoboken-EL/PATH terminal) seeming to be a virtual rolling museum of vintage relics, in my day! (including a few fine ex-"GREEN BUS" units!)

Man, if we could only go back in time.....

Though these photos are both from "Joisey", I thought I'd include them here, if only for the charming "small town" nostalgia (railfans will also enjoy these two views from 1981!)

Here, Fishbowl #204 of "KENT BUS COMPANY, INC." (as this was not a "local" outfit, this was a company I had no knowledge of) waiting at the former DL&W/E-L (then ConRail) Murray Hill station (note the "sightseeing" roof panels on #204)

In one photo, on the left, you can just glimpse one of the ancient ex-DL&W MU cars (I knew these venerable antiques VERY intimately from a very early age until they were retired in 1984)

Interestingly, the MU motor cars were built new for the electric suburban service out of Hoboken in 1930, while the trailers were converted from steam-hauled coaches, the oldest of which dated back to between 1912 and 1917!

These photos have a truly charming "quaint" look about them, very reminiscent of "small town New Jersey"........

New BRONXVILLE RTS #205 indeed makes for a sharp contrast alongside ex-FACC #2124, back in 1979......

NYO,

Here's one that I think you'll get a kick out of!

Seen somewhere in midtown Manhattan (surrounded by great cabs) is fleet # B-148 - a 1947 44 passenger ACF-Brill modeled as a C-44 and carrying serial # 0001 operating for Garden State Lines and assigned to A and W Bus Company of Newark, New Jersey.

Of note is the rather grotesque appendage over the destination sign which contained a full time motorized exhaust system as mandated under New York law.

# B-148 started out as a demo and in a second or third life became DeCamp Bus Company # 273.

Photo courtesy of 'bk.sales' and is available at eBay as item # 390813488089.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'
