I remember seeing a LL Old Look facing s/b on Main Street in the late 1960's. A buddy and I decided to go to Jones Beach on a Queens Transit New Look. I havane a picture of that bus somewhere. They had no center door. We deiced on QT instead of a Schenck route since it was 5 cents cheaper. As we headed down Main Street, passing the marquee of the Century movie house there was LL signed for Orchard Beach. We did a double take as this was the first time in our lives there that we had seen a female b/o. She was so big and tough looking, nobody would think to mess with her. |

In the QUEENS TRANSIT memories post, #876 was sold and assigned to the Avenue B-East Broadway bus company in that photo, still in QT colors.
I used to see those QT old looks on the Q25/34 Parsons Boulevard route during the mid 1970's. |

NYO,
A little background information on Steinway # 483;
It was already the era in which the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) gained control of what was left of private bus operations in the city to the extent that those operators became city contractors and all new and or used equipment was supplied by the DOT.
Steinway # 483 - a 1970 45 passenger Flxible modeled as a 111DD-D5 and one of fourteen likenesses numbered from 479 to 487 and 490 to 494 came to the company used from the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) of Albany, New York in 1984 as numbers of the same fleet did also arrive at both Triboro Coach and Green Bus Lines.
Of note on # 483 is the retention of Albany's livery and fleet number but a repainting of the front clip to Steinway's familiar orange and white for passenger recognition.
BTW; it was very easy to discern the difference between a 45 and 53 passenger Flxible New Look merely by the size of the aft most passenger window which, in the 45 case, was much narrower.

Isn't it strange how, today, in 2014, that it seems light years since Fishbowls, New Looks, and Old Looks were still in service, flaunting their stylish paint schemes?
Quite literally, the buses we today fondly remember in both New York in New Jersey truly constituted a "rainbow fleet", 45-50 years ago.
So many "Fallen Flags" still in operation, so many now-classic paint schemes to catch the eye.
We all took too much for granted back then.....we just assumed those buses would, somehow, go on forever......

Speaking of New York "Fallen Flags", these two Old Look photos (34th & 2nd) from 1973 recall the days of "BERGEN BUS".
Old Looks were solid, rugged, long-lived, no-nonsense coaches that seemed to be everywhere you looked, back in the day (LOVE those silver dash strips!)
Who amongst us once thought that the day would come when they'd all be gone.
The theatre marquee here further dates this 1973 street scene (do I hear the "Odd Couple" theme playing?)

i believe that 876 and 877 were leased, not sold to Avenue B . |

Speaking of "Fallen Flags" and Old Looks.....
These two photos from 1973 show HUDSON VALLEY's #615; with its silversiding and dash strips, this big suburban GM brings back great memories for yours truly......how well I recall similiar "Joisey" buses, back in the day.
Talk about a "commanding presence"!
While I am not 100% sure, I am almost positive that it was an HV Old Look that carried myself and my family on a wedding reception charter from Union City to Brooklyn, back in late '74.
This was ONE wedding I am GLAD I didn't pass up!

I think you might be confusing this company (one I am NOT familiar with) with the old "BERGEN AVENUE" company from Jersey City.
Could that be what might be throwing you off here?

I am not sure. I was going by the description at the bottom of both photographs from 40 years ago. It is hard to make out the lettering on the two buses. Hard to rely on the captions as we all saw in the first Queens Transit picture (of bus 876) when it was running for Ave B.
I don't know if Motor Coach Age ever did an article on Bergen Line Buses along with a historical roster......Mr. L "inquiring minds want to know". |

NEW YORK, KEANSBURG, and LONG BRANCH #81 at 30th & 10th Avenue, seen awating the trip back down to the Jersey Shore.
Man, these Old Look surburbans were beauties!
