Back in '71, well-dressed Wall Street Manhattanites could hop aboard a "Tee-Yay" Fishbowl and avail themselves to a "NEW Express Bus Service/Yorkville-Financial District".

Back in those days, "Fiddler On The Roof" and Ringling Bros. promised great entertainment for both young and old.......

Quick sidenote:

This thread originally was going to feature only the first picture linked here, but, almost as soon as I posted the link, I thought of how many old photos there are from several decades ago that truly qualify as historic images of New York.....images that are quite fascinating unto themselves, even if one overlooks the buses.

I tried to find photos that depict now-gone New York stores, old signange, avertisements for radio stations and political ads......photos that show just how much has disappeared in the span of just a few decades.

It IS quite a chore to hunt down the appropriate photos, but, for me, it is yet another delightful chance to travel back in time to see once again what I still clearly remember....as well as to see what I might have missed.

Hope you enjoy this nostalgic trip back....

When this 1972 photo was taken, Fishbowls were the norm, while MACKS (anywhere) were becoming quite rare, where they had not already disappeared.

Today, the Fishbowls themselves have been relegated to the pages of history, forever keeping company in the past with the ever-stalwart MACKS.....

A classic "face-off" greets us here at Washington Plaza, back in 1972.

The remaining Old looks were then nearing the end of their long and colorful career on the streets of New York.....

Eighteen years difference between these two Brooklyn views (1955/1973).

The 1955 photo I had posted a link to earlier, but wanted it to link it again here to contrast with the same scene as it was in 1973......

"Rough 'n Tumble" areas have always been a part of New York; this dismal street scene from 1972 (Myrtle & Bridge) serves to underscore the "nitty gritty" of such areas.

Old Look #7088, then nearing retirement, scurries along on her appointed rounds.

Note, too, that, back in those days, it seemed that almost every NYCTA/MTA bus carried a "GILBEY'S GIN" ad.......

Looking just a bit war-weary, Old Look #7015 awaits departure in this time-honored scene at Washington Plaza, 1970.

A fellow by the name of Leone was then running for Brooklyn boro president, as witnessed by the placard on #7015's dash.

Even in their twilight years, showing the battle scars of decades of faithful service, the Old Looks still retained that stalwart air of ruggedness and dependability......

School buses are usually YELLOW........but, here, the "school buses" are GREEN; these two GREEN BUS Macks are seen here in school service at Rockaway Park, back in '55.....

NYO,

Been there and done this 'gem' on the Vintage New York City thread a while back but it never hurts to see it again and again!

The Yellow that you refer to was adopted sometime in the fifties or early sixties by the U.S. Department of Transportation and is called 'National School Bus Chrome' complete with a black band under the window belt.

All U.S. operated purpose built school buses have been required to carry these colors since.

However, for reasons that escape me, transit operators both in and out of New York City that had part time school contracts were exempted from the rule and required just one front and one rear flashing red signal light and a 'School Bus' sign either covering or within the destination cabinet (as seen below on a Schenck model) except within New York City where virtually nothing except the signage was required.

Credit within photo.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'
