NYO,

Looks like no nap for me this afternoon!

Pictured is fleet # A239 - a 1935 30 passenger Mack Model 'CX' and one of two including # A240 purchased used from Green Bus Lines in the late forties.

The Model CX, the last Mack with a front engine, was an improved version of the earlier 'CL' with more contoured lines and, with 35 of the 50 built going to Green Line as their G501 to G535, you might consider that they were almost custom built for that company.

Enjoy,

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L"

Could you imagine, back in the day, if the average bus had an average service life of only 15 or so years? Shocked

Man!

Just think of how many years of service were given by those Old Looks and Fishbowls that were lucky enough to "soldier on" into the 80's!

Bus fans our age might not be young anymore, but, heck, we got to see all the great BUSES! Very Happy

Old Looks would not be serving Staten Island for too much longer when this "fleeting" glimpse was caught on camera at St. George (1970)......

WOW!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

*(this classic photo is dedicated to Mr."L"!)

The coaches parked at this bus parking area adjacent to the elevated IRT subway station at the 1964 World's Fair sure would make for a fine bus museum today!

Though PSNJ Fishbowls dominate, the other classics seen here are indeed worthy of preservation today, if they still existed!

The coach in the center background is certainly worthy of a second look!

This is one MAGNIFICENT "gathering".........

NYO,

As we say at the poker table; "I'll see you one and I'll raise you one!"

Seen below is a special parking lot designated only for Public Service of New Jersey equipment at the 39/40 New York World's Fair.

Interestingly, you can see two whole generations of buses in the scene.

Enjoy,

Another gem! Thanks, NYO!

I see a couple of 4106's, a 4104, and even an ancient 'Silversides' way back among the Suburban's.....but yeah...I can't make out what that oddball bus is...looks like maybe a coach version of a Bluebird, or Superior, but not sure...anyone know?

Mr. "L":

Talk about a "beautiful 'landscape' "! Very Happy

The sheer variety of buses in that view is boggling.....note even ASV's have been chartered for the grand event!

Believe it or not, there is some brief COLOR footage of this same gathering on a VHS tape I have on PS trolleys.......not only PS coaches are seen here, but also, buses from other companies......a true "rainbow fleet"!

Shows you just how vast a fleet PS had, where that many coaches could be spared for a charter and STILL provide normal service to daily riders!

NO WONDER they're called "The Good Old Days"! Wink

"NYO"

traildriver:

You are quite welcome!

Yep, that coach at center has also been puzzling me.....I KNOW I've seen pictures of similiar vehicles, but, for the life of me, I just cannot recall the make!

At first, I thought it MIGHT be a Flex, but, after consulting one of my books, I could see that my quick guess was wrong.

Whatever make it is, I sure would love to see one today! Very Happy

Following are several photos taken at Fresh Pond Rd., over a period of several years.

In this first scene, ancient BMT "Q" cars rattling along the old Myrtle line and the silent Old Looks below make for a nostalgic scene of historical transit in New York.

Talk about TIGHT parking!

The same location in 1972, showing new R-42 cars; the old Myrtle Avenue El had been closed for three years when this photo was taken.

Old Looks are still at hand between the elevated ramps......

Here we see a fan trip train of IRT Lo-V's (by this late date, no longer in revenue service) at Fresh Pond Road, loaded with "juice fans".

Note that the Old Looks are now gone, and Fishbowls are now in their place.

You can see that the bus at the rear is missing a portion of its windshield (perhaps this was a "dead storage" area for the "Tee-yay" at the time?)

A better view of the Fishbowls stored at Fresh Pond can be seen here in this view from 1971; the train passing by is on a fantrip, using a freshly-scrubbed set of prewar IND cars, displaying a "10" BMT route sign for the trip.

On a sidenote, the old BMT numbered routes were replaced by IND-style letters in the late 60's, after the new Chrystie St. connection opened.........
