S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, take note re; Westchester Street Transportation Company (WST);

1969 seems to have been the year that Detroit's Department of Street Railways (DSR) opened the sluice gates and flooded the market with many of their well kept TDH 5105's dating as far back as 1953 and 1954 with New York operators including Queens/Nassau Transit and WST benefiting by the availability.

#310, a 1954 model seen in October of 1973 at its Garden Avenue facility in Mt. Vernon below, was one of eighteen such 102 inch wide 40 foot buses to reached WST in 1969 with a breakdown of deliveries as follows;

1953 Model year; WST #'s 315, 326 (were DSR 1221 and 1214 respectively).

1954 Model year; WST #'s 310, 311, 312, 313, 314, 316, 317, 318, 319, 320, 321,322, 323, 325, 325, 327 (were DSR 1296, 1279, 1253, 1251, 1234, 1250, 1255, 1275 1237, 1252, 1282, 1233, 1265, 1235, 1249 and 1297 respectively).

Note that only DSR's first 100 5105's numbered 1201 to 1300 were equipped with passenger safety split sashes.

Photo courtesy of 'ttcbeat' and is available at eBay as item # 191126641456.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, take note re; Yonkers Bus Inc., and also note that it is unclear as to whether there was a relationship to the latter Yonkers Transit Corporation.

Shown below in two frames is an interesting ad from a 1932 issue of Bus Transportation Magazine (my Bible) extolling the virtues of SOCONY products and spotlighting Yonkers Bus Inc., of Yonkers, New York as a satisfied user.

The bus shown on the first page is a 1929 28 passenger Mack modeled as an 'AB'.

The article goes on to say that the company ran seven Macks, one White and one Reo (however, no further information is available on these buses).

Photos courtesy of '4509bus' and are available at eBay as item # 351062385275.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, take note re; Westchester Surface Ways;

Add one 1945 Ford 'Transit Bus' numbered as 211 and modeled as a 59B as seen below;

Incidentally, the interesting redesign of the passenger windows and doors was merely a glitch in the image.

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vault75' and is available at eBay as item # 181399025707.

Thanks to Mr. Linsky for posting the two pages of SOCONY ads for lubricants. This ad alerted me to the operation of Yonkers Bus Inc. on a route from Getty Square to Bryn Mawr station of the Putnam Division of the NYCRR. The railroad went north to Brewster and south to High Bridge from the hilly Bryn Mawr neighborhood, but did not connect homeowners with the main business district of Yonkers, namely Getty Square. Hence, the usefulness of buses using 2nd or 3rd gear with capable lubricants.
---
I suspect that this route is the ancestor of the present Bee-Line route 30, using Palmer Road to connect Yonkers, Bronxville, and New Rochelle. Edit 5.28.2014: Yes, the NY Public Service Commission granted Robert Tostanowski, owner of Yonkers Bus Inc, permission to operate his "Lockwood Avenue" bus, as long as he did not provide local pick-up/drop-offs along TARS routes. In 1957 it became route 30.
---
Edit: Below is a photo I took the other day (5.6.14) facing east to the site of the Bryn Mawr Station alluded to in the SOCONY ad Mr. Linsky posted above. At the time the ad was printed, Yonkers and the New York Central were debating the cost of replacing the grade crossing with a bridge.

---
An article in the Yonkers Herald-Statesman of 10.28.1955, explains that Yonkers Bus Inc. requested permission to establish a route on Kimball Avenue from Palmer Road (future Bee-Line 26?) to the new Cross County Shopping Center. The 1955 article states that Yonkers Bus Inc. operates routes from Yonkers to Bronxville, New Rochelle to Bronxville, and one entirely within Bronxville.
---

That strongly suggests that Yonkers Bus Inc. was still a transit company in 1955.
---
The opening of the Cross County Center (shopping mall) had a devastating impact on downtown Yonkers. In the case of east-west bus routes, it sent patrons east for shopping instead of west.

Unfortunatly I didn't find anything about Yonkers Bus Inc through a New York Corporations serch, however that isn't surprising since they don't seem to have any bus companies that were started before the 1950's.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

You're going to have to follow the bouncing ball on this one!

I am unsure that the following presentation regarding Third Avenue Railway System (TARS) affiliate 'The Yonkers Railroad Company' (TYRC) has any relationship to Yonkers Transit Company.

I can tell you that TARS bought the system in 1898 and it ran trolleys and then buses under the TYRC flag until 1953 and, by the fleet numbers that you have listed for Yonkers Transit, it may be that some TYRC equipment made its way there subsequently although nothing is indicated in the Westchester Street Transportation information.

Seen in front of a United States facility in Yonkers is fleet # 118 - a 1952 45 passenger Mack modeled as a C-45-DT and one of fifty likenesses numbered from 101 to 150 operating for The Yonkers Railroad Company of that namesake New York city.

The photo had to have been taken sometime between delivery in 1952 and the demise of the flag in 1953.

I would suggest a separate roster for this company that we can add other earlier buses of the same pedigree to.

Note that N4 Jamaica makes some notes on Yonkers Railroad in another thread and perhaps he can shed more light here.

Photo courtesy of '4509bus' and is available at eBay as item # 351073798578.

Best regards,

Mr. 'L'

Step 1 of this history is the sale of Yonkers Railroad to new investors.
Yonkers Herald Statesman article dated September 26, 1952,
Trolley Company Sale Completed
---
However, a prelude suggests that the buses had already been ordered and financing arranged. September 13, 1952, Financing the 50 Macks
----
Note that W.C.T.C. did not appear on the pale green Macks. The wording for seven years was Yonkers Railroad, as W.C.T.C actually bought Yonkers Railroad from TARS.
----
The December 24, 1959, issue of the Yonkers Herald Statesman describes the reason for the change of name from Yonkers Railroad to Yonkers Transit.
Headline: Yonkers Railroad Changing Name

N4 Jamaica,

Excuse my confusement but;

The only thing that's bugging me is where 'Yonkers Bus Inc.' fits into the mix and which was obviously used as early as the twenties as seen as the flag on the attached Mack model AB?

Many regards,

Mr. 'L'
