I was very lucky to find this rare early 60's photo of the "WASHINGTON FREEDOM RIDERS COMMITTEE" en-route to Washington DC, aboard a chartered ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl.

At the time of this picture, the Fishbowls were still "the new kids on the block" on the O&B at that time, with the fleet then still being mostly "Old Look"........

This haunting image from 1961 will remained burned in my memory forever.

Though I was quite young at the time, I still clearly remember seeing this terrifying photo on television, the newspapers, and magazines.

Truly a sad (and frightening) monument to ignorance and intolerance.....

A TRAILWAYS Flxible VISTA-LINER, carrying a load of Freedom Riders, en route to Montgomery, is here being guarded by Nationl Guard troops; the bus was on Highway 80, near the Mississippi border (1961).......

Gentlemen:

I started this topic to pay tribute to the "pioneer" African-Americans who, as drivers, operators, motorman, and conductors forged bravely ahead, to better themselves and to further strive for equality in the transit workplace.

As this topic progressed, I also chose to include links that covered the Freedom Rides of the early 60's; not only do these images shows us the rich variety of buses then operating, but, more importantly, serve as historical reminders........images forever frozen in time that remind us of those brave men and women....of all colors......who had the courage to stand up to the lions of injustice and intolerance......to make a difference.....and to light the flame of hope for a brighter future.

As you might expect, much research has been involved on my part; for me, it is both fascinating and most rewarding in so many aspects.

As with any transport-related hobby, the transit hobby encompasses more than just rolling stock, vehicles, and infrastructure.....it also holds the memories....the words.....and the stories.....of the people.......both famous and "everyday"......who all came together to make it all work....and history come alive.

We can still learn a great deal from the endeavors of the past.....

"NYO"

Into the 1960's, "COLORED WAITING ROOM" signs were (sadly) standard fixtures at bus and rail facilities in the South.

In most cases, the facilities were Spartan at best, a far cry from the waiting rooms provided for white passengers.

This 1940 photo (Durham, NC) is one that will appeal to both the historian and the bus enthusiast.........

A crowded scene at the (segregated) GREYHOUND station at Memphis, 1943.

Also note the prominent "WHITE WAITING ROOM" sign over the platform.

A SILVERSIDES is seen in the foreground.......

Two more photos of the crowded GREYHOUND terminal at Memphis, 1943.

Note Flx CLIPPER heading for Little Rock in the foreground in the first photo; a GREYHOUND Yellow is seen in the second view......
