John Roth,

My pleasure to fill your order as seen below in the form of a photo of fleet # 332 - a 1949 40 passenger Fageol Twin Coach Model 41-S and one of
four likenesses operating for the Atlantic City Transportation Company (ATC) of that seashore mecca in central New Jersey and were delivered in June of that year.

The Model 41-S, powered by a 451 cubic inch, 200 h.p. Fageol built gasoline engine mounted underfloor amidships and coupled to a Spicer Hydraulic Torque Converter transmission, featured a Torsilastic suspension system which gave its passengers a smooth and jolt free ride.

In addition to the four 41-S's, ATC had three other Twin Models on the property including five 45-S's which were the last of the original post war design.

It's a shame that the image below is not in color because it would have shown the company's unusual Black and pale yellow livery.

Photo courtesy of '4509bus' and has been sold on eBay.

Regards,

Mr. 'L"

Thanks NYO and Mr "L",

Perfect. Growing up in Baltimore it was GM, GM and a little ACF. My parents would vacation in Atlantic City every summer and stay on Virginia Ave where the boardwalk bus terminal was. I loved it. I even liked the livery the buses carried. Note the ad for the Ice Capades just behind the drivers window. I saw that every year too.

"Gridlock" certainly is nothing new, as it documented by this bustling Brooklyn street scene dating from 1933........

Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn (1030's)

The bus appears to be a MODEL 30, introduced in 1931.......

This one is certainly a 'cradle to grave' story.

Seen (upper plate) ready for the crusher after either being in the middle of a gun battle on the streets of Chicago or as the target for practice shooting in the junk yard is a 1954 Flxible/Twin Coach Model FT2P-40 that operated for Bluebird Coach Lines of Chicago, Illinois but started life in the more tropical climate of Los Angeles, California as one of ten likenesses with the Asbury Rapid Transit System (see lower photo).

The FT2P-40, better known as a Fageoliner, was built by the Flxible Corporation at their plant in Loudonville, Ohio under license agreement with Twin Coach and carried both names within its badge under the windshield.

While the Fageoliner looked much like an earlier post war Twin it was easily identifiable by its separate standee glasses.

Our focus operated as a two door transit bus for Asbury but in a suburban service radiating from downtown Chicago, Bluebird preferred two extra seats and therefore removed the rear door.

A sad ending for a classic old timer.

Upper photo courtesy of '1stpeter510' and is available on eBay as item # 400659101054.

By the later 1940's, these Brooklyn TWIN MODEL 30's presented a distinctly old-fashioned, antiquated look.

The one bus is signed "21 DE KALB AV".........

No date given for this snowy Brooklyn street scene (perhaps this was just after the infamous 1947 Blizzard); I'm not sure, though, of the model of this particular prewar TWIN......perhaps a MODEL 27?

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

No - this is fleet# D1243 - a 1941 40 passenger Twin Coach Model 41-GE (gas/electric) and one of 190 likenesses numbered between 1100 and 1289 ordered by the city immediately after the take over of the Brooklyn Bus Corporation in 1940.

These are the buses that I mentioned earlier that were Dieselized right after the war and then junked in 1948.

BTW; the picture had to be taken post war as evidenced by the added 'D' prefix to the fleet number over the destination sign which indicated that it was a Diesel conversion.

These buses came through in a very pleasant livery as seen in the Twin ad below (lower frame) and, for the life of me, I can't understand why the city didn't maintain the theme instead of picking something as morbid as they did in subsequent buys.

Another BTW; the actual order that came through was for 250 buses but the last 60 numbered 1300 to 1359 were Diesel electrics from the factory but, they too, met their maker in 1948!

Lower frame courtesy of '4509bus' of eBay.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L":

Thanks..........can always count on you to "set things to rights"! Wink

What threw me with that last photo was the grillwork on the dash; I know that the MODEL 27 was not equipped with such hardware, but, I thought it may have been the result of some in-house "streamlining". to update the appearances of the buses.

Another thing was that the standee windows were used on both the MODEL 27-GS and the 30-GS; that also was making me lean towards my assumption that the bus pictured was a MODEL 27.

I love ancient coaches like this.....they bring back many great old memories of the antique equipment used by the Hudson County "indies", 50-odd years ago......

Mr "L" you are correct. #1131 is in a very attractive livery. I'd go so far as to say "Handsome".
