"NYO" When the NYC Transit Authority came into existance in 1953, it was decided to convert all surface operations to diesel buses. This policy took efect in 1956 with a massive oreder of Mack C-49's which replaced all existing gasoline buses and streetcars.Trollybuses were eliminated in 1960.

I would like to know what the color was of the upper half of the North Shore Bus Twin Coach 41's as delivered in 1947 (nos. 150-159). Was it Gray or Silver? Any photos or any one with knowledge of the color would be greatly appreciated.

Appreciate the info.....much appreciated!

I still cannot fathom why those postwar TWINS were junked while still being fairly new....unless no other property was interested in them at the time.

As I had stated earlier, postwar TWINS were simply not to be seen in my general area; however, through the 1960's, I still remember some prewar TWINS (23-R/30-R) that were then being operated by a few area "indy" companies.

In my area, GMC's more than dominated; however, there were still a number of WHITES, MACKS, and ACF-BRILLS around at the time; by the end of the 60's, however, the latter three had virtually disappeared from the streets.......

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

The only comment that I can make here is that it was at that time that the city decided to rid their fleets of any gasoline powered jobs that were still running regardless of age or unused mileage.

If you think this was a crime, think about what the city did immediately after the 1940 takeover of the Brooklyn Bus Corporation when they purchased 190 Twin Coaches in 1941, ran them through the war, 'Dieselized' them in 1946 and 'junked' them in 1948 - it was about then that the expression "what were they thinking?" came about!

Thank you.....your comments do put things in perspective!

This reminds me of the huge investment in postwar PCC cars made by the CSL/CTA......these sleek cars were barely a decade old when they were scrapped (the CTA abandoned all remaining streetcar service in 1958), with some parts being "recycled" for use in new rapid transit equipment.

Recall the the old saying:

"....if it ain't BROKE....DON'T fix it...."

'nuff said!

I often wonder how many folks (including bus enthusiasts!) often fail to see postwar TWIN heritage in the Flex New Looks; thier windshields clearly larger versions of the windshields used on the postwar TWINS.

Recall that, about 1953, TWIN COACH transferred production of thier TWIN COACH-designed buses to Flxible.

This 1971 photo shows JAMACIA BUS' New Look #210.......

Had to include this beautiful color photo from "The Brew City" (Milwaukee).

This photo is also quite charming, recalling a long-ago time when new buses were handsome and sleek, and the folks who rode them dressed smartly.......aaaah, nostalgia!
