This 1955 yard scene has a somber, desolate aura to it, as if taken on a chilly, quite Sunday afternoon......

Another desolate, gritty scene from 1955.
Note the old 39th St. Ferry terminal on the right; by the time of this photo, the "ELECTRIC FERRIES" from St. George were operating to and from 69th St..........

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,
You picked out an interesting bus (seen below) with an equally interesting history.
But first, a few words about pre war New York operations;
Twin Coach had the market cornered and filled most of the stables of Surface Transportation, Jamaica Buses, North Shore Bus Company and Brooklyn Bus Corporation to a degree.
Mack, on the other hand, was second banana led by Green Bus Lines and followed by East Side and Comprehensive Omnibus Corporations, Avenue B and East Broadway with a smattering to both Brooklyn Bus Corporation and Surface Transportation.
These companies continued as Twin and Mack customers until 1942.
The grand entrance in 1934 of the Chicago based Omnibus Corporation's affiliate New York City Omnibus Corporation and its affiliates Fifth Avenue Coach, Madison Avenue Coach and Eighth Avenue Coach put hundreds of new Yellow Coaches into play which, of course, dwarfed anything else on the streets.
The post war era changed things in that Surface Transportation left Twin and split their large orders between GM and Mack.
Jamaica Buses switched to Mack and North Shore's last post war buses before takeover by the city were 10 1946 Twin Model 41-S's including #150 below - as far as Brooklyn Bus goes; when the city took over in 1940 they did buy nearly 200 Twins for the newly formed Brooklyn Bus Division and a large number immediately after the war but then switched to GM Diesels in 1947.
# 150 seen below and its siblings were transferred to Brooklyn from the Queens Bus Division in 1949 to join their Twin cousins.
Regards,
Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L":
Glad you found the pics interesting; I certainly found your historical narrative both informative and enjoyable!
AFAIK, the only postwar TWINS to even pass through my area were the Model FS-40 FAGEOLINERS that were operated by SOMERSET.
These would have passed through my old hometown of Union City, via the "tunnel cuts" (as we locals then called them) that connected the Lincoln Tunnel to S 3)
I might have seen them flash buy from the Hudson Boulevard overpass when I was quite young, but I can honestly say I cannot remember them..
Somerset's Old Looks and ACF-Brills, however, remain clearly fixed in my memory!
Those postwar TWINS that remain with us today indeed are important (albiet oft-forgotten) relics of motor bus history......

TWIN #169 is front in center in this 1955 view at W. 8th St.; the GMC is clearly the "odd one out", here.........

"UNDER THE FULTON EL" (circa 1956)
The ancient, creaking, clattering, whining, humming BMT "C" cars rumbling along the venerable elevated line indeed make for a sharp contrast with the sleek, modern TWIN rolling along beneath the elevated's antiquated, sinewy shadows......

This bus is one of the first Twin Coach 41-S models delivered to North Shore Bus (150-159).It is in the original paint scheme which appears to have a GRAY upper half--not SILVER like the BoT Twins. Do you think I am correct? I always wondered if the GM 4507's ordered by North Shore would have been green/gray also, or was the "as delivered" paint scheme of green/silver to BoT a BoT color scheme. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. |

Fellows:
Here's a photo gallery showing some truly STUNNING "O" scale 1947 Model 34-S TWIN COACHES, painted in a number of truly handsome liveries........these are truly miniature works of art!

NorthShore,
Your question concerning the livery that came with North Shore's twenty TDH 4509's is interesting.
These buses along with an order of 40 41S's from Twin Coach were diverted in pipeline as they were being readied for delivery to North Shore.
Because there are few good color photos available for the GM's (and the one shown in the upper frame below is only of mediocre quality at best) it is pretty difficult to answer your inquiry except that the livery is very close to but not exactly in what was to be the city's design - when I say not exactly I mean that the front bib treatment is slightly different.
I think it's possible that the city adopted their livery which arrived a year later from North Shore's jobs and which did not have a fleet number over the side destination sign as seen in the upper frame below.
I also think the only way that we can really resolve the question will be when a good resolution color shot comes along with the true shades of green.

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L"/All:
Any idea on what the story is here?
These photos show TWINS being scrapped an an unidentified scrapyard.
The photos dates to 1955 (according to captions); this seems far too early to be scrapping these buses, then almost new.
Even if the NYCTA wanted to retire them, these virtually new buses could have easily been sold off to another property, to rack up further service years.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks......
"NYO"
