Interestingly, GMC RTS #1 and GMDD New Look #780 were the same age - both were built in 1979.

That IS interesting!

With thier designs being so radically different from one another, you would think that there was an age difference of at least several years between the Fishbowl and the RTS!

I love old "contrast" pics such as this........ Wink

"THE CONVOY OF CLASSICS" (Hillside Avenue & Merrick Blvd., 1985)

Man, this looks like a promotional parade for a new bus museum! Shocked

Wonder what the story was here? Rolling Eyes

The very last bus doesn't look to be an MTA coach.......

Gentlemen,

What you see in the picture above would not be at all unusual in 1979 considering that, while the RTS made its debut in that year, GM of Canada continued to manufacture New Looks until 1988 with many sold to U.S. operators and the last one going to Santa Monica Municipal.

The reason for the extended life of the New Look line north of the border was that Canadian operators were not at all happy with the RTS and, unlike U.S. operators, were not obligated to buy the advanced design as crafted by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

It was this boycott by the Canadians that brought about a 'tuned up' version of the New Look in the form of the 'Classic' - probably one of the nicest looking buses to have ever come out of GM's design studios (see photo by Robert McConnell below).

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr."L":

As always, greatly appreciate the historical information and trivia!

Too, I had totally forgotten about the CLASSICS themselves, as they simply were not to be seen in my area (then and now)

In my area (Hudson County, NJ), starting in the late 60's, the Fishbowls began replacing the oldest of the Old Looks, as well as the Macks, Whites, and ACF-Brills.

Still more Old Looks went the way of the dodo bird in the mid-70's, when the NJDOT Flex New Looks arrived, which resulted in the retirement of still more of the "old guard"

However, it was not until about 1986 that the very last of the Old Looks disappeared from my area entirely; as the 80's drew to a close, second-hand GRUMMANS and new METROS were replacing the oldest Fishbowls.

The last Fishbowls disappeared about 1997; before I knew what was happening, NJT retired the old NJDOT New Looks.

It was about that time that I recall NJT taking delivery of new RTS coaches; the faithful old METROS left the scene several years back.

Today, through my town, only NABI's and NEOPLAN artics are to be seen; occassionaly, an MCI will make an appearance.

Time truly flies.....much too fast for me......

Thanks!

Any idea why there so many buses in such a long line?

My uneducated guess is that it is late afternoon and all those buses running on different routes are headed w/b on Hillside Avenue and are waiting to turn left to go s/b on Merrick Blvd to the Bus Terminal.

Thanks!

Being a lifelong resident of New Jersey, I had not a clue as to why such a long line up buses in this photo; whatever the reason, however, it indeed made for one awesome lineup of now-classic buses!

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

I call this photo ' The Parade Scene'!

I agree with our learned colleague Hart Bus in saying that this procession was obviously a group of 'split shifters' on the way from their depot to queue up for the rush hour out of Jamaica.

The line-up is as follows (foreground to background);

Flxible, RTS, RTS, RTS, New Look, RTS, New Look, Flxible.

Photo thanks to NYO.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'
