This item is really not off topic because it is likely that many buses that cross the George Washington Bridge between New York and New Jersey in the course of rush hours were woefully inconvenienced by the recent four day closure of two active bridge lanes under the pretext of conducting a traffic study.

In my experience, the only logical way to do such an examination of conditions would be by the use of traffic data collection equipment that can include rubber tube sensors across each roadway to record and reflect traffic patterns most accurately and most unobtrusively.

I applaud the people of Fort Lee, New Jersey for taking both the Port Authority and the State of New Jersey to task for the egregious and outrageous traffic snarls that resulted within their city.

I also applaud New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, an up front guy who I genuinely believe knew nothing of this travesty but took full responsibility for it at a news conference yesterday and indicated that he had already fired his deputy chief of staff for her involvement in what now appears to have been a politically motivated vendetta against the mayor of Fort Lee (and, if I know Mr. Christie, you can be certain that more heads will roll shortly!).

There have definitely been traffic studies involving lane closures (the reduction of I-95 northbound from four lanes to three just before the onramp from the Mass Pike in Weston, MA comes immediately to mind), but generally not without plenty of public outreach with a plainly stated goal and timetable. I think it's now clear from documents that have surfaced that there was no "traffic study" at the GWB.
