|
|
I recall when going into Nassau from queens on the Q113 at the county line stop on rockaway blvd the driver would get out of the seat and collect a nickel from everybody on the bus. This was late 60s or early 70s as when I started riding all the time in 76 it was not done. I asked the couple of old time guys at jbl they just said they had to collect it. Anybody have any ideal why? Thanks |

Apparently they still had fare 'zones' back in those days. I recall them collecting them somewhere around midway on the long Q60 GBL route, as well...... |

Tiny Tim & traildriver,,
The fact that the second zone fare collection point on Jamaica's # Q113 line to Far Rockaway happened to be at the Queens/Nassau line had nothing to do with entering or operating in Nassau County or vice versa - it was just a convenient place to pull over.
Two zone fares were permitted and generated based on mileage between terminuses and were generally found at the dead center of the run.
Green Bus Lines had three two zone fare lines including the Q60 (New York to South Jamaica), Q21 (Crossbay Boulevard to Rockaways) and the Q35 (Brooklyn to Rockaways).
Regards,
Mr. 'L' |

The Q44 had a fare zone between Queens and the Bronx. Drivers sold zone checks for 5 cents and collected them at Parsons Boulevard northbound and just before the Whitestone Bridge southbound. This lasted until the late 1970s |

On the Q60 Manhattan bound, the extra fare was collected around 63 Road/Junction Boulevard or just before it where the former Lefrak office building is.
Once the fares were increased during the 70's, the two fare zones became unnecessary and was redundant to collect the extra nickel or so. |

Queens Transit's QBx1 Flushing-Coop City was an extra fare route.
Triboro's Q53 Woodside -Rockaway was a premium fare line. |

What a PITA it must have been for the operator's back then....hard enough to just collect the fares from some passenger's on entering now, not to mention having to make change...... |
