We lost a great actor (and a good bus driver) today when Ernest Borgnine passed away here in Los Angeles at the age of 95.

While Mr. Borgnine won his place in the theater's hall of fame by taking a best actor Oscar for his role as Marty in Paddy Chayefsky's 1955 film of the same name, he will be best remembered for his small screen portrayal as Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale, the bumbling first officer in the sixties TV series McHale's Navy - a story of the hilarious misadventures of a misfit PT Boat crew during World War II.

Second only to his family and his love of the stage, his greatest pleasure was getting behind the wheel of his forty foot long custom built Prevost coach to travel the country and meeting people of every walk of life - he was really just a regular guy!

On a personal note, I would often run into Mr. Borgnine at the neighborhood grocery and the brief conversations that we had always revolved around buses - he was a great fan of Jackie Gleason's bus driving character Ralph Kramden.

He will be missed.

Upper photo is that of Mr. Borgnine behind the wheel of his Provost.
Lower photo shows a younger and thinner Mr. Borgnine as a passenger aboard a Surface Transportation GM TDH 4507 in the film Marty which was shot on location in The Bronx.
Both images have been borrowed for educational purposes only.

Always enjoyed his acting, whatever the role. Note: Prevost is the manufacturer of his motorhome.

Jimbo,

Thanks - I changed it (just shows you how much I know about modern buses!).

Regards,

Mr. 'L'
