S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

Here's another one that you can add to your list of defunct Nassau operators;

Seen sometime in 1978 and working a Flea Market charter at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York is fleet # 307 - an early sixties GM Coach Model TDH 4517 operating for the Roosevelt Bus Line, Inc.

While I vaguely remember the company, I have no further information except to say that it would seem obvious that it radiated from the unincorporated area of Roosevelt near the Village of Hempstead.

Photo courtesy of Vintage-Vault75 and is up for bid on eBay as item # 180955110626.

Mr. Linsky - Green Bus Lines, Inc., Jamaica, New York

I think I may have found the origin of the Roosevelt Bus Line, Inc. # 307 pictured above as being a 1960 GM Coach Model TDH 5302 and one of one hundred and thirty likenesses numbered from P-300 to P-429 operating for the then Public Service Coordinated Transport (PSCT) of Newark, New Jersey.

Pictured below in the same livery and carrying PSCT's later flag as New Jersey Transit (NJT) is fleet number 703A - 1969 GM Coach Model S8M 5303A and one of fifteen likenesses numbered from 700A to 714A.

This should close this case.

Photo courtesy of 4509bus and is up for bid on eBay as item # 370644529706.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Roosevelt Bus had probably either had just brought #307 or had a few years pior as according pictures I've seen that paint scheme was used on Public Service Coordinated Transport buses until 1971.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

O. K., there are a couple of matters that we can clear up now that I've come out of my momentary memory lapse!;

I have found a photo in my files of Rockville Centre Bus Corp. # 110 (see image below) which is a Ford built sometime between 1945 and 1948 and is probably a Model 29B which was most popular.

Rockville Centre # 113 (seen on the previous page of this thread) is a whole entirely different story;

Follow me closely now! sometime in late 1948 the Union City Body Company who built Ford's bodies for them and Transit Buses, Inc. who distributed the buses broke ties completely with the Ford Motor Company and struck out on their own with an entirely new model referred to as the '81' but was dubbed the 'Metropolitan' which had a Checker Motors chassis, a Continental engine and carried the badge of 'Transit Buses, Inc.' as can be seen under the windshield of # 113 (nothing at all about this bus was Ford! not even one screw!).

This should assist you in correcting your record for Rockville Centre as follows;

1946 Ford Model Model 29B: #110
1949 Transit Buses, Inc. Model 81: #113

Photo thanks to my good friend Joe Scully.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Thats the photo of #110 that I had seen before, though when I first saw it whoever posted it wasn't detailed with what model they thought it was.

Yeah the Ford Model looks nothing like #113.

Made the change to my last list update.

I believe that this is ex-Schenck Tours Inc #701, which was aquired by the Port Authority of New York And New Jersey along with its sister #706 in 1975. The photo was taken in Floral Park. I assume its the Schenck Transportation/Schenck Tours's yard based on the school buses in the background.

I found the photo on Bus Rosters on the WEB website under Charter/Misc.

Here is the ling to the page. http://cmtk3.webring.org/l/rd?ring=001bus;id=150;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eoocities%2Eorg%2F%7Ebuslist%2F

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

I'd have to give you an argument on this one!

To my knowledge, Schenck never had any GM New Looks in either transit or suburban configuration with glass roofs or with 'jack knife' rear doors.

There is another peculiarity here which puts a huge hole in your theory!; bus # 39 in the photo is carrying a 'BUS' license plate (Port Authority - PONYA - buses all carried 'OFFICIAL' plates because it was a political subdivision) which leads me to believe that, if the location is Schenck's yard, then Schenck may have bought this bus used from PONYA.

PONYA bought virtually all of their GM New Looks used with numbers coming from Triboro Coach and Queens/Nassau Transit and obviously from sightseeing companies as well.

My first thought was that # 39 could have been an ex Exposition Greyhound from the 64/65 World's Fair but none of their buses had jack knife rear doors either.

I guess this calls for further research.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

That could be true.

I know the Port Authority of NY and NJ brought (I assume) some T6H 5307A's in 1973, one of which was renumbered to #39 in the same year they brought the two buses from Schenck.

It is possible that Schenck brought that bus, or they brought back their old bus which maybe was modified by the Port Authority.

I can't really tell you what time this 1981 image was taken because I don't remember which way the entrance to the Hempstead Long Island Railroad Station in the background faced but the buses are definitely facing either north or south which would mean that it's either sometime around 9 AM or 3 PM on a very sunny day.

Stage left we see fleet # 796 - a 1981 Grumman (Flxible) Model 53102-8-1 and one of 125 likenesses numbered from 750 to 799 and 925 to 999 delivered to the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority (MSBA) as contract operator for the County of Nassau, New York.

These buses, familiarly known as the Model 870 and successors to Flxible's New Look design, were virtually the same as those ordered for New York City and which were a failure due to flaws in frame components.

However, while the county did encounter minor problems with their order, they did rate the 870's as generally favorable.

Fleet # 902 (stage right) appears to be a late seventies Flxible Model 53096-6-1 and while it shows up nowhere in records, the MSBA did take delivery of fifty-one such models numbered 850 to 900 in 1978.

# 796 is signed for the N6 line between Hempstead and Jamaica which was formally a route of the now defunct Bee Line, Inc. of Rockville Centre, New York.

You're looking directly north as the entrance faces to the south. The train platforms are directly behind the station. The 8 tracks all merge into a single track just pass the station before bearing westward toward Jamaica. The 4 westward tracks are platformed while the other 4 are layover tracks. The street in front is West Columbia St. With the sun angling from the west, it looks like between 1 and 3 PM. This was my old bus watching stumping ground back in the '60's.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall take note;

Seen in a junk yard somewhere many moons ago is fleet # 42 - an early forties Yellow/GM Coach flagged for the Jerusalem Avenue Bus Line, Inc. of North Merrick, New York.

The company, one of Nassau County's smallest operations, ran two lines out of Hempstead to Seaford.

# 42 was a 3600 series 'war baby' built sometime between 1941 and 1944 with steel replacing aluminum for its body as noted by the double set of 'side swipe' moldings between the front wheel well and what was the rear door.

Unfortunately, this bus and other similar specimens on the lot were not purchased new by the company so information is limited to my astute guesswork!

Photo courtesy of 'Vintage-Vult75' and is up for bid on eBay as item #
181026992379.
