S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

Take note on Roosevelt Bus Line, Inc.;

The 1957 GM TGH-3102 that you already have listed was fleet # 32 as seen in the photo below.

BTW; I seem to remember that Brothers Coach Corporation operated in Nassau years ago and I believe they were connected with Independent Coach Corporation of Hewlett.

In any event, Ohio records show that Brothers bought two 1957 TDH-3102's numbered coincidentally as 31 and 32 in the same month as Roosevelt bought their # 32.

Photo courtesy of '4509bus' and is available at eBay as item # 371113096034.

Best regards,

Mr. 'L'

A short trip back in time to Mineola shows what looks like a Hempstead Bus Mack LD3D, one of 11 added to the roster in 1942. Photo was taken on a rainy summer day sometime in 1949. What looks like a little police action - perhaps some hapless person came in contact with a moving vehicle. The bus just pulling away from the curb is northbound on Mineola Blvd. Second Street is at the traffic light. Behind is the overpass that spans the Long Island Railroad mainline.

The second photo was taken the same day but looking northbound from the corner of Mineola Blvd. and Second St. The two buses (coming and going) both look like Schenck Ford Transits as evident by the Mineola destination heading to it's terminus on Third St just across the bridge. Southbound Hempstead Buses always had Hempstead as part of it's destination sign.

This stretch of Mineola Blvd. was shared both by Hempstead Bus and Schenck Transportation between Old Country Road to the south and Jericho Turnpike to the north.

Once again we're back to Mineola with another police photo, but our main focus in on the bus to the left.

The date is May 1950 and you're looking to the south at the intersection of Mineola Blvd. and Jackson Ave. We see Schenck Transportation bus #108, a 1942 Mack LD3G heading outbound and will shortly turn onto westbound Jericho Turnpike to Jamaica. Note the destination curtain: Looks like EXPRESS JAMAICA MINEOLA BLVD TERM

This may be a good tie in with the roster listing above this thread as #108 is NOT listed - only 96, 100 through 107. Perhaps this will be an addition to the roster.

After seeing the dent in the fender, it is not easy to concentrate on the bus. That was one hard hit!

Here's a great photo of fleet# 403 already documented in file as a 1958 45 passenger Mack modeled as a C-47-DT but delivered along with likeness # 401 as demos in 1960 to Hempstead Bus Corporation of Hempstead, New York.

While #403's window configuration is Mack's rendition of a suburban style, it's seating and rear door are conventional transit.

Of note is Mack's last ditch attempt (without the help of Niagara Frontier's special 'New Look' front clip) to jazz up its under windshield areas with dual headlamps embedded along with updated directional signals in an aluminum panel accompanied by a GM style heavy chromium bumper.

Photo courtesy of 'ttcbeat' and is available at eBay as item # 191283614004.

Thank you Mr. L for a great shot of a rare bus! This has got to be the most attractive Mack bus ever produced. It's too bad that it came too late.

And speaking of Hempstead Bus Corp. buses. The following two photos show two more in it's element. Both were taken sometime in 1950. Location is the intersection of Mineola Blvd and Old Country Road. Without knowing the fleet number, it's hard to identify bus types, but from the roster listing the only Macks of this style in 1950 were 1948 models C-41-GT (241-248) and one 1949 ex-Mack Demo C-37-DT 249 in the Hempstead fleet.

The bus in the top photo may very well be one of the C-41-GT in the fleet. Just finishing its right turn from 3rd St., it will continue on its southbound trek to Hempstead possibly continuing on to Freeport. We are looking north towards the LIRR overpass into downtown Mineola. The photographer is actually standing on Franklin Ave. in Garden City as Old Country Road is the dividing boundary between the two towns with Mineola Blvd north of it.

One curiosity are the "Bronx Whitestone Bridge" and "Triboro Bridge" directional signs affixed to the post on the corner which seems out of place when you consider the distance to those locales.

The bottom photo is looking east with another Hempstead Bus sitting at the curb with what looks like a much older bus in front. I'm not sure of the destination since Hempstead buses never traveled along Old Country Road when I was living there - 1960 on.

Frankie,

Thanks,

Both photos above are very interesting but the top one is even more so;

While the Hempstead bus had to be post war, most if not almost all of the cars in the shot are not! which might mean that the bus is among Mack's first offerings of their new model after the war in 1947.

The building to the left of the frame is very familiar to me because it's the home of the title company where we closed on the purchase of our house in Woodmere many moons ago.

Conversely, the lower frame shows mostly post war autos.

BTW; Triborogh's bridge and tunnel signs were plastered as far away as Montauk (almost!).

Thanks for sharing.

Best regards,

Mr. 'L'

Taken on July 17th. 1931 on Newbridge Road in Bellmore, Long Island, we see the aftermath of a minor accident (at least for the bus) in which an auto was virtually demolished after seemingly being T boned by our focus.

What is known about the mishap is that no injuries were reported and no clue as to the owner of the bus can be discerned except to note that it was a light duty Yellow Coach circa late twenties.

By a process of elimination I can say with some degree of certainty that it was not Hempstead Bus Corporation, Schenck Transportation, Bee Line, Inc. or Mack Brothers as none of these companies used Yellow equipment at the time.

In fact, the only Long Island operator that did was Semke Bus Line of Hempstead - of course, I'm open to debate on this point.

Maybe the bus in the 1931 collision photo with the destination HEMPSTEAD belonged to the Jerusalem Avenue Bus Company (or Jerusalem Avenue Bus Line, Inc., as in the photo below), a North Merrick firm in business from about 1930 to 1973. Streets and avenues radiate from Hempstead, long a hub of Nassau County. One such street goes through Jerusalem, founded by Quakers in what is now North Wantagh. East-west Jerusalem Avenue crosses north-south Newbridge Road in North Bellmore. At present, there is no bus service on that part of Newbridge Road, but two Jerusalem Avenue buses are designated N54 and N55 and they cross Newbridge Road, ordinarily without collisions. When Sunrise Mall, Massapequa, opened, there was some realignment of one branch of Jersualem Avenue Bus Co. I rode the old route, but cannot recall where it branched off Jersualem Avenue or whether it used Newbridge Road at any point.

N4 Jamaica,

It's certainly a possibility except for the fact that what little we know about Jerusalem's earliest equipment does not include Yellows.

However, we can't rule it out and I guess we'll just have to wait and see what pictures might come up in the future.

Best regards,

Mr. 'L'

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

Take note of new entry for Vintage Nassau County; Bay Park - East Rockaway Bus Line;

1939 Yellow Coach model 1204 #5

The light weight 25 passenger 126 inch wheelbase Yellow Model 1204 was among the first of its class to gain power from a transversely mounted rear engine (in this case, a Chevrolet truck block) tied by angle drive to a three speed mechanical transmission - a definite advantage over the COE based power plant of its chief competitor Ford Transit.

600 of the popular model were sold between 1938 and 1940 with Public Service Coordinated Transport of New Jersey being the largest customer.

Perhaps the smallest of Nassau's bygone private bus operators, Bay Park - East Rockaway Bus Line maintained only one rather short route between the Villages of Lynbrook and East Rockaway on the South Shore.
