All:

I was just flipping (yet again!) through my copy of "CHICAGO SURFACE LINES: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY", by Alan R. Lind.

Though streetcars dominate this fine book, there are certainly a number of great vintage bus photos.

Clearly, Chicago's streets hosted a truly diverse collection of bus makes and models through the decades, amomg them:

GMC

YELLOW

TWIN COACH

FLXIBLE

MACK

ACF

ACF-BRILL

WHITE

SUPERIOR/REO

(this does not include the CSL trolley buses)

Like FACC in New York, GMC's were the preferred replacement for the double-deckers in Chicago.

From what I've read (quite awhile ago), the only Old Look GM's purchased by the CTA were the former CMCC vehicles, when the CTA took over the company in the mid-1950's

I had a softcover book years ago about CTA buses, that I purchased at the IRM, back in 1978.

Postwar TWIN COACHES, by and large, seemed to be the "signature" coach of the CTA; I remember WHITES, MACKS, and FLEX New Looks also being represented in this great book, which, sadly, I no longer have.

A few questions:

How many ex-CSL/CMCC/CTA coaches survive today?

When did the CTA become an all Fishbowl/New Look fleet?

I believe I read that the WHITES and the MACKS were retired during the 60's, none remaining on the roster by 1970.

Lastly, when were the last of the original CTA GMC Fishbowls retired?

Again, I appreciate any and all info!

Thanks!

NYO

Transit buffs and classic car enthusiasts are sure to find much of interest in this timeless Chicago street scene, dating from 1963!

A number of your questions are answered on this website:

You might also want to scan through the posts on www.chicagobus.org for helpful info. There's some discussion of preserved CTA buses in this thread:

That book is currently (1/21/12) on eBay for bid or BIN. It's the companion volume to your Chicago Surface Lines book.

It's eBay #260937634899.

Most ex-CSL buses were gone by 1963 at the latest. Twin 44S's, Brills and Whites all went about the same time. CMC diesels lasted a bit longer, 4506's until 1966, 4507's until 1969 (thanks to route 16-Lake), 5502's until 1969 also, abd 5103's until 1972. Big Twins 52S2P's until 1972 also, old look Flx's until 1974. 5307's replaced everything except 3700 Flx's and 300 5301's. These were gone by very early 90's, 5307's soon after by 1996 (ironical, huh?).

Appreciate this great info!

Certainly a most impressive listing of historic, once-commonplace coaches!

No matter wherever we were, we all took such fascinating vehicles for granted.....

Which entity ran the TDH 3207's on the parking lot shuttles. Was that CMC? I think some of those buses ran into the 60's and were then sold off to other properties.

I don't know much about most CTA Fishbowls, but here's one that definitely lived on!

I do know that it was a 1961 TDH 5301 and originally one of one hundred and fifty likenesses numbered 100 to 249 delivered in that year.

Add any comments if you know what they actually used this work bus for.

Credit within frame.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

The 3207s that you were referring to were purchased for parking lot shuttle service by Chicago Motor Coach. They continued in this service under CTA ownership into the mid 60s. The only 3207 that I am aware of that went on to further service was purchased by Leo high school on the southside of Chicago. They also had a 4506. There was some short-term use of ex CTA Twins and GM 3609s by Waukegan North Chicago transit in the early 60s. But other than these very few ex CTA buses went on to see further service with other agencies.
