The press image below dated August 16th. 1934, shows the Chicago Motor Coach Company garage at 5211 Cottage Grove Ave. during a strike.

The strikers were affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and the strike had just been called that day (possibly that morning, noted by the clock above the opening).

It appears that one of the company's double-decker buses was leaving the garage with a replacement driver as the seemingly calm striking personnel looked on.

Note that years ago it was common practice on very warm summer days to operate with the engine bonnets partially ajar to prevent overheating (which it usually didn't!).

Also notice that Chicago's double deckers lacked headlights just as did the 'DD' of its New York affiliate Fifth Avenue Coach.
