Made multiple updates to the list yesterday, since it was one day after I had made updates I just used the same post. (Which is why it says it was posted on 10/30 while the As Of date says 10/31.)

In antique parlance an item, regardless of what it is, is considered a relic at 50 years old and the New York State Motor Vehicle Bureau (DMV) looks at any vehicle as historic at the age of 30.

However, I think that with buses the rule of thumb should be that they are considered 'vintage' once every one of a particular ilk known to exist has been retired from revenue service.

In the good old days of 'real' buses that would have averaged at about twenty five to thirty years as opposed to today's 'styrofoam' fire traps that are usually gone from the scene in a matter of little more than a decade (the GM RTS might just be the one exception to the rule).

Many regards,

Mr. 'L'

"Styrofoam" fire traps... Love the description!

These new buses all look alike... One knew the difference between a GM and a Mack; a Flxible; a Twin Coach, etc... and not just bus enthusiasts!

MaBSTOA 15,

I call them 'firetraps' because only seconds after a fire starts in the engine compartment (and that's where more than 90% of bus fires begin) the entire bus becomes an inferno and within minutes all that's left is a sleleton.

I can't believe that these engine rooms don't have adequate fire walls to stem incursions into the passenger cabins.

Maybe someone will wake up to this problem some day!

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

IIRC didn't LIALS run a bunch of Eagles at one time? I seem to remember that my son rode one on a school trip Albany during the 90-91 school year.

I personally know very little about LIAS, other then that they were contracted by the student government of SUNY Stony brook to run a route from Port Jefferson to Smith Haven Mall Via the college with stops at the local supermarket and what is today Coventry Mall in the 70's, and that Coram Bus Service got mad at because the Student Government said they talked to all the bus companies in the phone book but never contacted them and also the Student Government route cost less then Coram's Port Jefferson-Smith Haven Mall route. Coram Bus Service ended up with the route anyway a few years later. Also I know that the company was listed as a contractor for Suffolk Transit in an 1983 audit of the system. If I remember correctly it was said that they were one of the companies the county overpaid for service.

I wouldn't be surprised though if LIAS did have Eagles, since it seems that a few companies that had coach buses had Eagles at some point.

LIALS started out as an airport taxi service on LI. IIRC they ran extended (stretched) Checker vehicles. I think they were called Aerocaches by the manufacturer. I think they ran routes along the south shore, mid-island and north shore.

They would rendezvous on the LIE service road at Little Neck Parkway where you might have to change vehicles depending on which airport you were headed to. I think there was a stop e/b on the s/s of the LIE also at Little Neck.

They then branched into charter service with their Eagles and had their garage on Newton Court in Hauppague. They were owned by a family named Stuart or Stewart.

Then I started seeing a 718 number on their buses along with their 631 number. A check on the internet showed that they were operating out of Brooklyn, bought by some Russians.

That's all I know

I figured out why I couldn't find anything on LIALS was because their legal name is Long Island Limousine Service Corp. There are 3 listed entries on the New York State Corporation and Business Entity Database.

Entry #1 was for Long Island Limousine Service which was started in 1972 and had it's name changed in 1979 to Stuart's Limo Corp. Inactive in 1981

Entry #2 was for Long Island Service Corp started the same day #1 had it's name changed. The last name of the person on the DOS Process was Stewart. Inactive in 2009

Entry #3 was for Long Island Service Corp started on the same day that #2 became Inactive. This one is currently active, and is based in Hauppauge.

I recall seeing LIALS in the early 80's. And they Port went after them claiming they owed money to them. I don't know if it went to court or what the outcome was but all of a sudden they were gone for a while then I would see them once in a while.
