World War II, the war that was supposed to have ended all wars, took a heavy toll on America's civilian work force with thousands upon thousands of able bodied young men from all walks of life answering the call to duty.

Women, who traditionally made homes for their families and tended to the mundane needs of their children, also rose to the occasion by filling the void left on the home front.

In fact, there wasn't a defense plant to be seen that didn't have scores of women working on the machines that helped to win the war.

Bus driving was no exception and by the beginning of 1942 thousands of ladies had begun to occupy empty driver's seats nationwide - and they did a yeoman's job of it too!

Pictured below we see one such lass at the wheel of a Pacific Greyhound Lines commuter coach heading into San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge from Marin County.

The bus, a 1942 Yellow Coach Model TD 4505 carrying fleet number 1142 was one of sixty seven purchased during that year for the service.

Notice the prominent Yellow Coach insignia and the 'black out' curtains for night time operation.
