Early "DE DION" single-deck bus operating overseas, 1913 (Paris, I believe)....

Great FACC memories. Thanks!
Living about 35 miles from NY I rode one of the last Queen Mary's at the age of 5. And still recall seeing a 740 with a rebuilt 'old look' front end!

Guess I had bus blood in me at a very young age.

Still recall checking the 740 to see what kind of rear windows and engine hatch screens it had.

It's too bad bus book publishers never include rear view of the coaches.

Old Look:

Glad you're enjoying the thread! (Welcome aboard, BTW!)

I agree; most bus books seldom show the rears of the vintage coaches; I always remember the Old Looks with their large round rear windows, and the smaller, oval, or half-moon windows on the MACKS and ACF-Brills that I grew up with, back in the 60's.

According to my mother (now 93) I've had buses in my blood since before I was even a year old.....now,THAT I believe!

In Frank Rowsome Jr.'s classic "TROLLEY CAR TREASURY", there is a picture of one of the early 5Th Avenue DE DION "BOUTONS"; certainly looks like a MERCEDES product!

The De Dion coaches had, by the 1920's, become the "standard" bus type in Paris.

By the time I hit this planet, the last of the FACC double-deckers had already been gone nearly four years......oh, well!

A question for the Fifth Ave. Coach historians on this board:

In the various NYC bus books that have been published in recent years, there are numerous photographs of FACCo buses in the Washington Square vicinity, usually with the Arch prominently in the background. By the 1970's, MaBSTOA buses no longer traveled on the streets through the square. Does anyone know when this routing change was made?

Fifth Avenue buses stopped going through Washington Square around 1964. By then, of course, MABSTOA controlled the routes so that it was easy for NY City's government to ban the buses in Wash. Square Park. The buses were re-routed going east on 8th Street to Fourth Ave., where there was a stand for driver relief. NB buses went west on 9th Street and then north on 5th Ave. This would change in 1966 when Fifth and Madison Aves. became one way.

Just came across this photo (dated 1947) showing a FACC open-topper beneath the Washington Square Arch.

Note 1947 photo date; according to Oliver J. Ogden's "FIFTH AVENUE COACH COMPANY", the last buses of this type ran in 1946.

Still, a nostalgic vignette of a long-gone New York.....

Here's a circa-1912 photo of 5th Avenue; FACC bus on left appears to be a 1908 "DE DION" Type 8.

These buses were later rebuilt in the FACC shops......

This is a color shot from a British film that was released in 1959, "LIFELINE".

Note the FACC bus in the background, possibly a TD-4507.....

Nice try, but it's a 1945 TD 4506!

Mr."L"......

Recall, I used the word "POSSIBLY"? Rolling Eyes

As I was only hazarding a guess, I figured I MIGHT at least be CLOSE! Shocked

Anyway, appreciate the correct model designation! Very Happy
