S-60 regarding the update to Alert Coach # 700. I rode that bus occasionally on their short-lived route from Walt Whitman Mall to Main Street / Roosevelt Ave. IIRC, the bus was in a suburban configuration and had no a/c. I think it had a dark green livery, but 30+ years can play tricks on one's mind.

Alert usually used two MC-8's on that route. They had the same livery as Fishbowl #92.

Also used was a PD-4104 and a Prevost deck and 1/2. Don't remember the fleet #'s.

One day a short Fishbowl transit was sent into Flushing for a PM run. i seem to remember a driver saying that 4 of them were bought from a company in the Mid-West.

One correction/addition-------Babylon Transit 450 is ex-Steinway #420.

I thought it was proven that Babylon Transit #420 wasn't Steinway #420 because Baylon 420 had a A/C and Steinway's didn't have A/C's? Or ar you talking about another bus that's not Babylon Transit #420?

While the focus of this presentation already appears in our rosters thanks to Herculean efforts on the part of S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, I thought the image to be picture perfect and worthy of showcasing.

Seen on a pretty June day in 1968 at Huntington Station, L.I. is fleet # 374 - a 1964 53 passenger GM Coach modeled as a SDM-5302 and one of nine likenesses numbered between 367 and 375 operating for the Long Island Railroad but purchased either directly or indirectly by Huntington Coach Corporation.

I'm at a loss to explain what these coaches were used for other than to say that they may have been part of a rail/road service in which train passengers paid a combination fare that included shuttling to and from stations.

Any further enlightenment would be appreciated.

Photo by 'ttcbeat' and is available at eBay as item # 191240222234.

During the PRR years, the LIRR was struggling financially. To reduce costs, the LIRR experimented with Budd RDC cars on east end service (Greenport & Montauk). Later on, it tried substitute bus service off-season and on some in-season runs. Huntington Coach was contracted to provide that service.

Mr. L., the Huntington Coach photo was taken in Greenport. The building was the old LIRR freight house. The bus service was called "Road 'n Rail". The freight building was modified at that time with the addition of an overhead door on the west end of the building. A bus was stored there overnight for the first run in the AM.
This building is now the Greenport museum building of the Railroad Museum of Long Island. http://www.rmli.us/RMLI/Welcome.html

To all:

I moved out to Suffolk County in 1976. I seem to recall when I first moved out the LIRR had the "Ride and Rail" operation that consisted of tours of the East End of Long Island on weekends. You would take a regularly scheduled train to Huntington and then get on one of the waiting Rand R buses to go out east and return.

Therefore seeing the fishbowl was not startling to me

ECA,

What you say about L.I.R.R. bus service makes sense because # 374 (pictured above) and its ilk are in full suburban regalia including comfortable high back seats and no standee glasses.

Obviously, they were set for long distance operation and not as local service.

Regards,

WCA

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

Take note for Inter County Motor Coach;

Seen below at the company yard in Babylon is fleet # 317 - a very early sixties model TDH 4517 flagged for Inter County but showing Babylon Transit as operator.

While I find nothing in Ohio records for # 317 I do see a # 316 and a # 318 purchased in 1960 and 1961 respectively by Utility Lines of Parchogue which may just be a coincidence.

I wish I had more to give you on this one.

Photo courtesy of 'ttcbeat' and is available at eBay as item # 191300222533.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr. L.

According to the Ohio records Utiliy Lines # 317 was a 1960 GM TGH3102 and was received at their Nassau yards. (Which is why it wasn't mentioned on their Suffolk list since I had only listed the buses they had delivered to their Suffolk yard.)
