Interesting study regarding the old SIRT North Shore Line:

I rode the North Shore SIRT at least twice before abandonment, and I lived five blocks south of Richmond Terrace during the 1960's, riding the R 102. I claim that waterside transit has half the patronage of inland transit. Even the churches along Kill Van Kill had lower attendance, because you cannot get passengers or parishioners from the water. Renovating the North Shore in 2011 would provide the people of Port Richmond a quicker trip to St. George, but the larger crowds are available along Forest Avenue, Victory Blvd., etc. For me, the bus transit problem is slow boarding and frequent red traffic signals. North Shore rail would have fast boarding, no intersections, yet few passengers.
