I don't know how many of you, if any, will be interested in this but i'd post it anyway, its a Mass Transportation Directory for Nassau And Suffolk Counties from 1952, It only lists the companies that were around at that time.

LONG ISLAND

In addition to the traditional city transit systems which started out as streetcar systems, there existed a number of independent suburban bus lines, which in many cases have basically been forgotten. But the 1952 "Mass Transportation's Directory" provides an interesting "snapshot", of what obscure bus companies had coexisted with the main transit providers.

Not included are certain intercity bus providers also providing suburban or commuter service. Some suburban lines may be omitted, due to incompleteness or inconsistencies with available data.

NASSAU COUNTY BUS COMPANIES EVOLVING TO MTA
The following bus companies were acquired by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1973, and became known as the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority, later Long Island Bus.

Information on points served is from the 1952 "Mass Transportation's Directory", except for Stage Coach Lines and Branch Bus Corp., which did not exist at the time.

Bee Line - served Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Freeport, Elmont, Hempstead, Franklin Square.

Branch Bus Corp. - no further information.

Hempstead Bus Corp. - served Hempstead, Mineola, Garden City, Freeport, Lynbrook, Baldwin, Hicksville, Levittown.

Hendrickson Bus Co. - served Oyster Bay, Bayville, Glen Cove, Glenhead, Greenvale, Locust Valley, Seacliff.

Jerusalem Avenue Bus Line - no further information.

Rockville Centre Bus Corp. - served Rockville Centre, Lakeview, Long Beach, Island Park, Hempstead, Oceanside.

Roosevelt Bus Line - served Long Island.

Schneck Transportation Co. - served Long Island.

Stage Coach Lines - no further information.

Utility Lines - suburban served Freeport to Patchogue along Merrick Road and Montauk Highway.

ADDITIONAL NASSAU COUNTY BUS COMPANIES EXISTING IN 1952
Information on points served is from the 1952 "Mass Transportation's Directory". Some of these companies presumably were absorbed into any of the ten companies acquired by MTA in 1973.

Bay Park-East Rockaway Bus Line - suburban served East Rockaway, Bay Park, Hewlett Point, Hewlett, Lynbrook.

Dileo Bus Line - suburban served Baldwin Harbor, Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh.

Levittown Bus Corp. - suburban served Hempstead, Farmingdale, Hicksville, Levittown.

Joseph F. Maranta - based in Massapequa, no further information.

Mack Bros. Transportation Co. - served Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor.

Nassau Bus Line - served Far Rockaway, Hewlett, Inwood, Lynbrook, Woodmere, Atlantic Beach.

Purinton Coach Line - city service in Farmingdale.

Semke Bus Line - served Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Oceanside, Westbury, Baldwin.

Star Bus Lines - suburban service around Bellmore.

Universal Auto Bus Service Corp. - suburban served Great Neck area.

SUFFOLK COUNTY BUS COMPANIES EXISTING IN 1952
Information on points served is from the 1952 "Mass Transportation's Directory". Some of these companies presumably were eventually absorbed into Suffolk County Transit.

Bornscheuer Bus Co. - suburban served Amityville, Copiague, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Babylon.

Louis A. Fuoco Bus Line - served Patchogue, East Patchogue, Hagerman, Bellport, South Haven, Mastic, Mastic Beach, Port Jefferson, Medford, Coram, Ridge, Calverton, Riverhead.

Huntington Coach Corp. - served Huntington, Farmingdale, Melville, Halesite.

Quinn's Bus Lines - served Suffolk County.

Suffolk Bus Corp. - served Bay Shore, Brentwood, West Brentwood, Central Islip, Islip, Babylon.

Sunrise Coach Lines - suburban served Greenport, Riverhead, Southampton, Sag Harbor, Easthampton.

Utility Lines - suburban served Freeport to Patchogue along Merrick Road and Montauk Highway.

S-60,

Very nice report, and it certainly brings back memories for us Long Island old timers! (one pictured below).

Let's see what I can do to fill in a few blanks for the Nassau County segment;

You can add Hewlett as one of Bee Line's terminations, and you can also add Long Beach as well as Cedarhurst and Lawrence to Nassau Bus Line.

Branch Bus Corporation operated to Point Lookout from Long Beach.

Jerusalem Avenue touched Massapequa Park, Merrick, Amityville, Roosevelt Field and Hempstead.

Schenck Transportation serviced Jamaica, Flushing, Hicksville, Glen Cove, Mineola, Manorhaven, East Meadow, Lynbrook and Great Neck.

And, while Jamaica Buses was Queens based, it served North Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence and Inwood.

Pictured is a custom Long Island built 20 passenger 1930's coach carrying fleet number 44 and operating for the Nassau Bus Line, Inc. then of Hewlett, New York.

The company, which began operations in 1912, is reputed to be the second oldest motorized carrier in the State of New York with only Fifth Avenue Coach beating it by five years.

Photo purchased by writer on eBay.

Thank you Mr. Linsky, but i can't take all the credit for it.

I found it on Google while looking up Louis A. Fuoco Bus Line.

I found out something else while looking them up, it seams that the 1981 New Flyers that they ran at the start of Suffolk Transit weren't brought by the county, but by the companies according to Louis A. Fuoco Bus Line.

It seams Louis A. Fuoco Bus Service, Inc, merged out, what ever that means, back on May,14 1996. Their old Depot is now used by First Student.

I know this is old, but it seems Quinn's Bus Line provided local service between Port Jefferson and Wading River.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

Don't quote me on this but I believe the Branch Bus Corporation, which may have been owned by the owners of Nassau Bus Lines, served one route between Long Beach Railroad Station and Point Lookout.

I also believe that when they folded, the City of Long Beach stepped in to continue the service by request of Nassau County.

Again, I stand corrected on this information.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

This thread speaks of 1952 bus routes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Today at the Massapequa Central Avenue Library, I came across Proquest Historical Newspapers for earlier years at Newsday, an online tool that can be accessed at the refrence department and by Massapequa card holders from home. In that source, I came across a May 14, 1942, Newsday bus map and route lists for "when you run out of gasoline."
---
I scribbled some notes, generally omitting services available in 2015. Remember, we are talking about WARTIME ROUTES.
---
GlenCove - Syosset
Bayville - Farmingdale.
Hendrickson Bus Lines of Bayville, hourly from Locust Valley and Glen Cove to Bethpage. Special trips from Bayville to Republic, $3 per month. Special trips from Locust Valley to Grumman, $2.50 per month.
---
Schenck, Glen Cove to Flushing, as at present.
Schenck, Port Washington to Mineola, then Mineola to Roosevelt Field and Hicksville.
In Great Neck: Univeral Auto Bus Service.
In Baldwin: Mack Brothers Transportation Company.
Freeport to Wantagh, frequent service by Dileo Bus Lines.
----
Many of these owners are named in older posts on this thread.
---
Joe McMahon, near n19.

Hendrickson Bus has been a school bus operation for as long as I've lived in Suffolk County (1976). They are owned/affiliated with Huntington Coach, also a school bus operation. They employ the white shadowing of letters and numbers on their equipment.

Acorrding to Huntington Coach's website Hendrickson had 15 Transit buses when Mr. Schenck sold both Hendrickson and Huntington Coach to his empolyee Mr. Clifford, in like the 50's.
