|
|
Rumors fly where I work and I dismiss about 99 percent of them but I was talking to one of the drivers and he mentioned to me that the D4500s that Greyhound used were made especially for Greyhound. (Although the vents above the tailights of these Greyhound MCIs are unique to any other MCIs that I've seen.)
Can anyone verify this? Or is it another rumor to be dismissed. |

Ken,
I would have to say that it used to be that if they were ordered for Greyhound, they were specially built for Greyhound.
Greyhound's reputation for writing specifications for any buses that they purchased dates back to time immemorial.
However, the days of building special models for the company as Yellow/ GM did back when including the 'Silversides' and the 'Scenicruiser' are over.
Practicalities and economies would prohibit such customization today.
This does not preclude Greyhound's ability to add custom tailored options for themselves when you consider the volumes that they buy.
Good hearing from you.

Thank you kind sir! Very interesting indeed. I appreciate that. This would be the 1 percent I'll take seriously then. But like I mentioned before about the grille above the tailights on both sides and how they kind of buldged out and no other MCI had them I was certainly inclined to give credibility to him.
There had to be more than meets the eye other than bulging body parts. extra pulleys, bigger radiator. Something different.
Thanks again. |

These buses came with features that Greyhound specified for their needs, otherwise they are an off the shelf model that any operator can buy for his fleet. Trailways of New York (Adirondack,Pine Hill,New York) has several in their fleet and I have ridden on one on several occasions. These seat 52 passengers versus 55 in the Greyhound models, but are just about as cramped as the Greyhound units are. Capitol Trailways has some, too as does Peter Pan. The new Prevost coaches Greyhound is now running on some routes is another bus that will sooner or later turn up in the fleets of other companies unless it has already done so. Trailways of New York has both the H3-45 and the LeMirage models in its fleet. When I came back from the Nickel Plate Road convention in Cleveland, the bus out of Buffalo to Batavia was a LeMirage. Greyhound Canada may still have LeMirages inherited from Voyageur in their fleet. So, the two Greyhound fleets have something of mixed fleets. Yes some of the remaining MC9s and 96A3s and 102A3s have seven speed manual trannies for use in the west of Canada. |
