I did not see any MCI's when I passed (e/b) through Long Beach. Only I saw were a bunch of the Orange Striped buses waiting to be dispatched.

The correct spelling in this case in "whether" not "Weather".

This afternoon, 4.12.2010, while traveling on NY 109, I saw a "Not In Service" MCI heading west. At Babylon LIRR station about 3:45 p.m., I found two MTA Bus MCI's. I uploaded several photos to my album

A close examination of the photos shows that 1885 just says MTA and 3293 says MTA Bus.

Bring me up to date weather or no whether!

Are these MCI's former MTA Bus 4500's used in Express Service?

If so, Long Beach is sure coming up in the world!

Hello, Mr. Linsky!
It takes me a while to figure out what models various buses are and their origin. However, I can explain this much. The MCI's now apparently garaged in Mitchell Field LI Bus garage number ten or fewer. The LIRR has been doing considerable track work, and up to this point either local charters provided van service, school bus replacements, or sometimes coach replacements. In the past 8 years or so, LI Bus (being part of the same MTA as LIRR) began to replace train service with hard-seat Orions, even over long distances at high speeds, as Babylon-intermediate-stations-Montauk. Only in the past few months, the MTA took some surplus New York City express buses and assigned them to Mitchell Field. They do not run local LI Bus routes, merely the substitute service for LIRR track work. In this case (Babylon, 4.12.2010), the timetables listed no bus substitution that day, so I asked the ticket agent why the coaches were there. Her answer was that they were needed that morning.
----
I am certain that others will identify which garages gave up MCI's for Long Island service.
Best wishes. Joe McMahon

Mr. 'L'

These buses are 102DL model MCI's in the 18xx and 19xx range. The MCI D4500 start at 3001 up to 34xx and then the 43xx. What these buses are basically doing is replacing the LIB 600's. These were diesel Orion V's that were sent to the junk yard when the NYCT takeover nonsense happened. Good old NYCT to junk running buses and then go we are short buses, pull NYCT scrap out of the garbage!!

Joe/Nick,

Thanks for the information.

I'm a little confused on the MCI models (being a pre 1960's specialist myself!) and looked up the 102 DL which seems to appear a lot like the 4500 series.

Which are the ones that I see running down Fifth Avenue in the evening rush hour when I'm in the city as I was two weeks ago? (as pictured).

They are gorgeous buses!

BTW; Nick - glad to see you on the board - been thinking of checking in with you.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Those are MCI D4500 CT's numbered 2210-2250. They operate out of the Yukon and Spring Creek Depots.

MCI changed their model designations in 2000.

Old designation: 102DL3
102 = 102" wide
D = D series
L = 45' long (a 40' long bus would be a 102D3)
3 = 3 axles

New designation: D4500
D = D series
45 = 45' long
00 = series (there are also 4501s and 4505s)

NJ Transit runs 40'x96" MCIs, which have an "N" suffix (D4000N) for "narrow." All D-series have three axles.

Later models (beginning in 2005, I think) are further designated "classic" (D4500CL) or "contemporary" (D4500CT) based on their styling. The 2247 pictured above is an example of "contemporary."

Not entirely. Joe's photos show 3293 doing LIRR shuttle work.

3293 on loan to LIRR Shuttle from LGA. And from the way I understand it, the bus is not even at LIB overnight. Should have side the ones assigned to LIB are 18xx and 19xx, possible even the 27xx-28xx coaches.
