1 dead, 9 hurt in school bus crash

Chicago Tribune, May 21, 2007
By Jeremy Gorner
Tribune staff reporter

A pedestrian was killed by a school bus in a multivehicle crash that left nine other people injured on Chicago's South Side, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before 11 a.m. at Garfield Boulevard and Wentworth Avenue, Chicago police said. No children were on the bus at the time.
The bus driver may have suffered a heart attack, stroke or seizure before hitting the pedestrian and at least two other moving vehicles, Wentworth District police said. The driver also suffered some form of trauma as a result of the crash, police said.

The pedestrian was dead on the scene, according to Wentworth District police. The injuries involved people in vehicles struck by the bus, officials said.

Three of the nine victims were taken to local hospitals in serious condition — two to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, and one to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said Eve Rodriguez, a Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman.

Five other victims were transported in "stable" condition — three to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, and two to St. Bernard Hospital, she said. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

One person was taken in good condition to Provident Hospital of Cook County.

Two CTA buses — the northbound No. 24 Wentworth and the east and westbound No. 55 Garfield — were rerouted around the accident site, said Wanda Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Transit Authority.

The Police Department's major accident investigation unit was on the scene this afternoon.
