Seen below in a picture taken sometime in the early fifties is fleet number 1019 - a 1940 Yellow Coach (GM) Model TD 4502 and one of fifty (1011 to 1060) built for and delivered to the Surface Transportation Corporation of New York between December 1940 and July 1941.
While what you see is the real thing, it isn't exactly the whole thing!
With the rear two thirds of the bus cut away and devoid of its heavy steering gear and front suspension, Surface Transportation turned what would have been fodder for the junkie into a useful tool to help the disabled in relearning to become mobile.
The vehicle, which was mounted on a dolly for easy movement, was donated by the company to a rehabilitation center in upper Manhattan and may still be in use today.
