Pictured in a factory pose is fleet number 1737 - a 1948 Mack Model C-45-DT and one of 185 (1600 to 1784) delivered to Surface Transportation Corporation of New York City in that year.
From its very early beginnings in 1910 as Third Avenue Railway System (TARS) through its merger with New York City Omnibus in 1956 to its eventual takeover by the city in 1962, Surface Transportation was a dominant player in Big Apple transit with a number of prestigious crosstown routes as well as Third Avenue, Tenth Avenue, Broadway, the entire Bronx and lower Westchester.
