Pictured during the throws of an endurance test somewhere along the U.S. upper east coast is a 1910 chain drive Randolph Truck manufactured by the Randolph Motor Car Company division of the General Motors Corporation of Flint, Michigan.
The Munsey Tour, as it was called, was not a race but a test of strength and reliability with the winners (all of the 22 entries that completed the course) gleefully touting the prestigious accomplishment in subsequent advertisements.
The seventeen hundred mile route of the tour began in Philadelphia and wended its way through several states passing Boston, Portland, the upper end of Lake Champlain and down across southern New York touching parts of Pennsylvania again and then to Maryland before finishing in Washington, D.C.
A little Randolph history;
In 1909 W.C. Durant, founder of General Motors, bought The Randolph Motor Car Co. that was formed in Chicago, Illinois only the year before. Durant moved the business to Flint, Michigan but sold it back to the original owner in 1911. Apparently the Randolph purchase did not influence GM truck design and sales nor, for that matter, anyone else's judging by the very early demise of the brand.
