The other day, I was standing across the street from an eastbound N19 that had just dropped off a passenger on Merrick Road. That part of the street was in deep shadow. When the new 1700 (Orion VII) pulled out into traffic, I noticed three white lights shining, low on the left side of the bus. My guess was that they are intended to illuminate the pavement of the lane into which the bus is moving, probably as a safety measure. Am I correct? Is this a new feature?

Sounds like they might be 'cornering lights' similar to what first appeared on Cadillac in 1962.

Actuated by the whichever directional signal was used, that front side would be illuminated making it much easier and safer to turn into dark areas such as driveways.

Note in the photo below that you can clearly see the cornering fixture just above the bumper and behind the headlights.
