Here's a question for you Nassau County specialists;

Pictured below is fleet number 222 - a 1953 GM TDH 3714 operating for the Schenck Transportation Company of Floral Park, New York.

While it's a good looking bus with probably one of the most interesting of livery designs and colors, it is not the focus of this essay.

What is the focus is its destination sign showing a Long Beach/Far Rockaway run.

As far as I can remember, Nassau Bus Lines ran the route at the time this picture was taken. and did so since time immemorial!

The only thing that I can figure is that there was a relationship between Bee Line (which owned Nassau) and Schenck.

Can anyone shed more light on this anomaly?

I was very familiar with the area at the time and, in fact, took out my first home mortgage from the Lawrence Cedarhurst Federal Savings Bank that's advertised on the side of the bus.

To answer your question - Schenck bought Nassau Bus Lines in the late 1950s. The two companies remained affiliated until the MSBA takeover in 1973. That's why the Schenck bus pictured is signed for the LB-FR route, today's N33.

To correct another, related posting, Schenck did not acquire Universal Auto Bus, a small operator that primarily served Great Neck, until 1969 (not 1960 as was posted).

Bee Line never owned Nassau Bus. It did own Rockville Centre Bus, Utility Lines, and Stage Coach.

I grew up in Nassau County in the 50s and 60s, and returned in 1978, so I've observing this stuff my whole life. I also have worked in the transportation field most of my career.

Hope this clears up the question.

Thanks for the update (the Nassau, Bee Line, Schenck history can be a bit blurred).

I too am a Nassau County alumnus and still own a couple of pieces of property in the Town of Hempstead.

BTW; let me welcome you to BusTalk and say that we look forward to your valued contributions.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Thank you Mr. Linsky. I noticed that you are a Green Bus alumnus. If you can share your e-mail with me, I may have some questions you can answer. In return, I can probably help you - I am a LIRR retiree. Thanks again.
