Tonight, at the monthly meeting of the Long Island - Sunrise Trail chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, the first reel of 16mm films contained scenes along the Third Avenue el in the final month of operation, May, 1955. A few Surface Transportation Mackswere seen along the route. Some had the famous stripe; others were solid red below the windows. I suspect they were 1600's. At Chatham Square, I spotted one or two Bingham Macks, marked (if my eyes and memories are good) by horizontal-sliding windows. When the film showed the Third Avenue el making its trek along 129th Street to the Willis Avenue Bridge, in the foreground was a bus yard of Macks, grey above green.

Joe,

You're absolutely right about the 'Bingham' buses having sliders for windows instead of the traditional vertical type.

Not only did the side passenger windows work that way, but so did the openable rear windows over the engine hatches.

Pictured below is fleet number 5387 - a 1950 Mack Model C-50-DT and one of 400 delivered to the City of New York Board of Transportation in that year (less 20 diverted to Miami which were replaced).

They were called Binghams because the then head of NYCBoT Sidney H. Bingham was instrumental in their design.

The almost brand new 5387 is seen in 1951 on the number 3 Utica Avenue line in Brooklyn where most of the 50's were originally assigned to replace traction cars (some of which can still be seen in the background).
