Okay, a few of us have had contact with trackless trolleys. They're still running in Boston, Dayton, Seattle and San Francisco as well as up in Vancouver. Alas, Edmonton has dropped its poles and joined the ranks of the bland and diesel-powered bus world. As a matter of fact, I got to spend about 45 minutes at the wheel of a Marmon-Herrington TC44 up in Dayton many years ago. Had a blast.

But overseas, the TC is still popular here and there, and is being used on some Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes.

This video - in Italian - shows a demo run of the Irisbus Civis articulated automated coach, a trackless trolley version of the buses they have been building in Europe for a few years now. The appendage above the windshield "reads" the dashed dual lines on the pavement and "follows" it. The driver can take over, of course, when need be.

Watch the driver. He looks as if he really wants to grab the steering wheel! Look how close to the curb this low-floor artic can get as well. Enjoy!
